Many people have been saying that the AF Servo mode on the Digital Rebel doesnt work with the russian firmware hack.
Well, I've said all along that it works fine, you just have to make that extra LITTLE effort to quickly release the shutter button, and then depress. No biggie.
When I was at the zoo yesterday, there was a monkey who was swinging widly (and very quickly) from one side of the cage to the other.
I tried AI Autofocus, but that wouldnt work. I tried One Shot, but since there was a cage, it would focus on the cage. It would focus on the monkey sometimes, but the monkey was so fast, it was long gone before I could compose and take a pic.
Well, I enabled AF Servo, and the camera grabbed on to the monkey right away. I happily followed him from one end of the cage to the other, and the camera/lens tracked perfectly. When I needed to take the shot, just a quick release/press, and perfecto! No problems at all.
Once again, the hacked servo mode is not perfect, but very close, and best of all free!

I would have like to have framed him better, but that was my inability to track him since he was moving so fast!

Drisley,

As I wrote in the other post, this method is not always reliable. I have a feeling that it depends on the lens. Maybe it is related to focus speed. I certainly can not get it to work with my Sigma 170-500 (slow focuser).

Yes, that has to do with the lens, not the camera.
The Servo on the 10D is no faster.
Servo works very well with all my lenses.

When the camera is the limiting factor, you would need to get a MKII.

True.

With that method, your initial shot will be a hiar out of foucs.......BUT..........the remaining shots should work as if you're using real time AI Servo.

...............still a pain though.

Doh, I got all excited for a moment and thought another release of the firmware came out that made it so we didn't haveta do this little trick anymore!

Well, I enabled AF Servo...

I do not have the hack installed but would like to know how this is enabled and what mode were you in?

If you install the russian firmware hack, the choice of af mode is selected by use of the left direction button. It works in all the manual modes.

Wow, this is old!! Drisley has since graduated through a few different bodies.......I guess it is still useful info for those that have a DRebel (a good camera in my book!)
