View Full Version : DRebel + 70-200/2.8 + 2x extender - How to carry?

I recently returned from a trip where I used my DRebel extensively. Much of the time, I was carrying it around with a 70-200/2.8L lens. I have done this before with the camera hanging on the neck strap. While heavy, I haven't had any problems.

On this trip, I also used the 2x extender. I noticed several times that the lens/extender would become loose from the camera mount, almost as if the button had been pressed (it had not). Luckily, the lens did not fall off the camera.

After this happened two or three times, I figured it was not an accident. I then attached a monopod to the lens mount and carried the camera from that.

Is this to be expected? My guess is that the lens/extender combo is too much weight for the mount to handle. With all the weight carried by the neckstrap (camera) after some walking around it puts too much strain on the mount.

Along these lines, are there any "strap" carrying options that would attached to the lens, so the camera can be carried around the neck?

Really?!
I dont think the lens/extender should come loose under any circumstances.

Not without pushing the lens release button. There is a strong spring lock on it, though. If that had failed, then the release would be wishy-washy.

Hmmm.., the lens release button (on the camera) seems to be fine.

The first time it happened, I thought the button was pushed accidentally. This was not the case. The camera/lens/extender was around my neck on the strap. I was walking quickly and as a result, the camera was bouncing a bit against my chest. It seems this "bouncing" motion is what caused the lens to come loose on the mount.

It only happens with the lens+extender. The extreme weight of that combo makes me think it is putting too much pressure on the mount.

If the mount is supposed to be able to handle this, then I should probably have the camera looked at.

Somewhat off topic, but if you switch to an OpTech strap (they call it a 'weight reduction system') it has a lot of stretch to it which will cushion a lot of the jarring you get with the OEM Canon strap.

I used to carry mine around my neck with a regular strap (UPstrap) all the time without problems (other than neck strain).

Get somebody local who should be experienced, like a local Canon dealer. If they agree that it is wrong, then send it to Canon Repair. It ought to be simple to fix, once they are inside the body.

I second Tom's vote on the Optech strap. One of the best $20 I've spent on camera gear.

Remember that old topic "Best gear for under $20" or something like that? Stupid discussion cost me $163, including the Optech.

And I love every doo-dad I bought.

In reading back over your initial post, it sounds like you only had the problem with the 2X TC installed. Is it possible that the problem is with that?

The release button on the 2X is a bit more exposed than the release button on the body. :? :?

The problem is only with the 2x attached. However, the point where it comes loose is where the 2x attached to the body. Since it only happens with the 2x, I figured it might be a weight issue.

Based on what I am hearing here, there is either a problem with my body mount or the 2x mount. I am going to take it to my local dealer and have them look at it.

Thanks for all the help.

When you go, don't forget the Optech strap.
