.....and price!!!

I just replaced my aging Pioneer 2X DVD-R that I paid over $300.00 for way back when with a Lite-On 8X burner... it cost only $80.00 @ Newegg!!!

Well I just backed up 4.25 Gigs of Images to DVD-R in under 10 minutes!! (9min 26 sec)

SCHWEEEEET!

And to think.. I burned my first disks on an old Phillips 2X SCSI CD-R burner that took about 45 minutes to burn 640MB of data.. and cost me $600.00

What software are you using?

I'm wrestling with Roxio, and I find it to be pretty bloated and occasionally slow. Also, I have a lot of glitches on the disks that I really can't explain.

I should get me one of those DVD burners. Last weekend's shoot ran me out of disk space. I had to delete a lot of non-keepers before I could finish copying the files over.

To paraphrase JZaun: So much to buy, so little money.

Indeed!

My Newfoundland trip resulted in 18Gigabytes of images!!!!!!

I could just barely stuff that on my working drive... but that meant little to no room leftover for actual editing and converted files.

Tom.

The burner came with some crappy Jr. version of a thing called "Sonic" :?

But I have been using "Nero" for some time. At first I had installed the new DVD-Rw it was not recognized by Nero... I was convinced I was out of luck as the newest version (6.something) required paying for an upgrade.

But it turns out the the last update to version 5.5 (what I had) DID support the new 8X DVD-burners. So I downloaded the free update to 5.5.10.56 or somethig... and I was burning at 8X

I've been seriously thinking of switching to Nero, too. I hear consistently good things about it.

It's that MkII 1.3 crap factor working against you. My 10D has a 1.6x crap factor, so I end up deleting more pictures, thus making more room. :)

You should just give me your camera, and then you'll have more room on your disks.

Tom, I agree on Nero - it's very good. I currently use NTI's product, which I like quite a bit, too. Roxio is consumer-level stuff - Nero and NTI are in the poweruser category.

NTI is quite good. Don't know about the little spitting dragon thing they have going, but its good nonetheless.

It does look a little goofy, I'll agree, but it works great.

"EasyCD Creator" was once "the thing" up to about Version 4 (when it was still "Adaptec" ... in fact the first versions were made by Corel till Adaptec bought it all)

But it was at around the same time that Adaptec switched all it's software to the "Roxio" division that Nero became the 500lb gorrilla of CD-Burning.

I have not touched "Roxio" since.

If you wait a little bit you'll be able to get your hands on a 16X DVD-/+R/W burner which also does Dual Layer DVD+R. It's the Pioneer DVR-A08 which was announced in early July. Hopefully it'll be hitting the streets in a month or two.

16x, 8x, 4x - doesn't matter. I don't have the patience to wait for any of them, so I leave the room when they're burning. I go good but cheap - old, but quality burners are fine with me. Hell, my 24x CD-ROM burner has lived through 3 machines now. And I only got it because my 4x died.

Ya they are wicked I got myself a deal 3 days ago. The store was selling the HP dual format 420i for like $160, but their site had it for $99, I went in argued, argued and argued and they eventually sold it to me for $99. This is obviously beaver money.

Its really great. The only problem I have is that Dual Layer burners are slowly becoming a fad and they will be "the thing" next year, guess I will need to upgrade next summer............. right now the media is hard to find and stupidly expensive...............The burners for them aint that cheap either.

Cheers.

Tom I am using Roxio and it works great!! Never have a problem as long as I don't drag and drop :? If I go thru Creator Classic it workd fine..The desk top drag and drop icon just hangs up when I drag files there!!!!

Just a Thought While I can remember I had a thought, I think :?

I got myself a new one, the Sony DRU 700A, which can also burn Double Layer DVDs; 8.5 GB on one disk. The DL DVDs are not yet economically interesting yet, I don't know exactly what an empty DL DVD costs, but it's much more than two standard empty DVDs.

Still, it's a very nice DVD writer. I got it for € 149 (US$ 180), which is not expensive. (But European prices can't really be compared to US prices because of taxes etc....).

It came with a suite of Nero software which works great (Nero Burning ROM 6.0 and a bunch of other programs). Never had any problem with the software, it's very clear and easy to use and has a lot of features, from simply making a data CD or DVD to making DVDs with menus etc...

Yeah but Dual layer is also slow for now (obviously faster drives will arrive) so for now you can burn three or four regular DVDs in the time it would take to burn a single dual layer...

Dual layer is also in the midst of competing standards. At least you can get DVD+/-R drives now while they sort that out. Get a dual layer now, and you'll be wondering whether you just bought Betamax for your home.

i got a Sony 8x burner. it's only 8 months old and it no longer burns. i'm going back to Pioneer, or maybe a Plextor. i use Roxio 6. haven't had any real problems with it. it is kind of clumbsy though. been thinking about Nero for a while now.

WoW!! An $80 burner, and you can put 4.25 gigs on a disk in less than 10 minutes. I guess I know what my next upgrade will be!
