If I were to sell photos that have people in it, to a marketing company, would I first have to have a signed release from those people?

Yep...
You can sell photos of people taken in public places for "artisitc" use (like a gallery etc..) without a release.
But if it is for anything commercial.. then a release is required to protect you and the marketing company from being sued.

With some stock photography companies, they ask the photographer to answer this for each photo:
( ) Model Release on file ( ) No Model Release on file
If you answer the first one, then the deal can go ahead. If you answer the second one, then often the deal stops there.
