low light, im particularly fond of this one...i really have a thing for ambient lighting, i cant stand the flash. but its so hard to take sharp shots, a little movement on my part results in completely ruining the shot i intended.

G'day nitewulf!

Just a few pointers from an amateur like me. First of all go and buy a copy of BreezeBrowser then see if your internet provider has some spare space set aside for users. Create an online gallery. If you want critique on your pictures then post them in Critique corner. If you want specific advice then post them here with a question. Plus it takes less time to download and view and viewer can choose which picture to zoom on if you give them thumbnails.

The problem with posting photos is that as a viewer we are not sure what you are trying to convine. For example 1st shot. Is it designed to be a candid? Then it would be much better if you can capture the facial expression. Is there a specific theme to the shot? Where is the lady looking?

Shot #4 with a glass. Why are you using macro here? The macro mode is designed to let you focus on subject which is outside normal zoom settings 60cm-infinity. I can understand you wanting to try it out by why would you then underexpose the subject you are trying to bring into focus in the first place? You could have equally just stepped back and then zoomed in using the zoom feature to fill the subject withi the frame. Just my opinion. Lets look closer on this one. Your exposure and other data is stored in jpg file as exif. For example for this shot your data is:

7.0-28.0mm @ 7.0mm Your lense is fully zoomed out and at its widest setting
Subject dist: 0.270m As shortest focus distance on your G5 is 60cm obviously you need to switch to macro to get the subject in focus. Its only 27cm away
1/8 sec, f/2.0 Exposure settings. The f-stop of 2.0 gives you shallowest depth-of-field, but that probably combination of Macro mode and zoom setting. Hence your glass is in focus but not the back wall
Mode: Auto There is little interest here as G5 is intelligent enough to provide you with more or less proper settings
Metering: Evaluative Evalutive metering gives you best possible exposure for entire scene. You could have tried centre-weighted as this is where you subject is and your depth of field is very shallow meaning that perhaps all glass, lighter and cigarette packet could come out visible to the viewer. Or perhaps spot metering the glass itself. Overall to me is very underexposed picture but maybe that the mood you were aiming for
ISO: Auto You will notice that it also a fairly noise image. Look on the table where the glass is and you may notice that there are a number of pixels which form strage dark pattern. Thats digital noise and is a consequence of ISO setting. In photography you have to trade-off some things for others. Because you chose to shoot in low ambient light without flash the camera decided to expose your image on higher sensitivity setting (I assume its somewhere around ISO 100) and hence the extra digital noise
AF mode: Single AF
Drive: Single frame shooting
White balance: Auto Not really much here but your image is too warm IMO. This could have been corrected by using pre-set choice of white balance or metering the scene off a grey card before hand and then storing the setting as custom wb
Flash: Off This is again another example of trade-off. A direct flash would overexpose your subject and not allow enough ambient light to get the right feel. This may require a dedicated external flash set-up on the side with a diffuser like LumiQuest pocket bouncer and gold insert to give it back the warm feel

I am by no means an accomplished photographer but the point I am trying to convey is this start studying up on your camera. The better you know its capabilities and weakneses the better your pictures will be. Its not important what others think of your work as long as you are happy. However I feel you would not be posting it here if you were 100% so. Take your time explorer each setting if you have patience and time. I certainly don't so I do the next best thing read-up on it on the web :)

great advice, i gotta look up about making a gallery. it'd defiinitely be easier to browse thorugh for others. i posted the shots to hear some general comments.

the first shot was taken w/o the knowledge of the subject...thats the thing, it was such a candid pose, i just took it. if i didnt take it, i'd have regretted it later...and if i asked her to pose, it wouldnt have been natural.

those first 4/5 pictures are when i just got the camera, so i was fooling around with practically everything. so the first picture was me checking out how good the 4x optical zoom would be as i took it sitting on my porch, and the woman was across the street.

the fourth picture, again, i realize now that i could have stood back and zoomed in as well, but i was just fooling around with the macro. and the thing is, i like the way the lighting came out, pretty worm. what i really want is to be able to take that kind of a shot in manual. i think i got somewhat better at it during these past few months though.

the reddish one, with my friend and the candle sort of represents that, though i would have liked it if it was bit more exposed.

and how did you extract all that info from the file by the way?
