Hi Trevor & welcome to POTN

Looks like you have mainly got it nailed with a good set of images, your panning is good though in #3 & #7 it seems that you may have had the shutter a little too high (frozen wheels) and also in the case of #3 it looks a little soft compared to all the others. In #1 the razor thin DoF has kept only the number plate dead sharp.

That Sigma appears to be very sharp especially if these were taken mostly at the 300mm end & cropped my Canon 70-300 is tad soft at 300 by comparison.

What was your keeper rate like?

Oh, we must have walked around each other a couple of times as the viewpoints look kind of familiar :)

PS How do like the 40D ?

Thanks for the comments.

#1,5&8 were taken at the 300mm end, and yes this lens is very sharp. the narrow DOF you refer to in #1 was in fact motion blur because I was following the front of the car & not the driver. DOF shouldn't be a problem because the aperture was F20 on this shot;).

Keeper rate is still low at around 10-15% where slower (1/160 or less) shutter speeds are used, but it is getting better :D. I Need to pick faster action area's for the faster (1/320) shutter shots just to get some more motion blur in the wheels etc. Keeper rate is higher here (around 25%) but needs more work.

Loving the 40D keeper rate so much higher than the 20D. Just in a different league IMO.

I had a chat with someone on the day who said it was his first visit to Lydden, near the hairpin bend. Was that you?

Yes, point taken about #1 as I noticed that 'effect' especially in the case of the turns ~ its like the rear end is starting slide or skip out causing the blur compared to the sharper front end.

Re the shutter speed I have always tried to get mine very much under 1/200 wherever possible for my few visits to motorsport. I was well pleased to get car No.7 in my thread at 1/40s

And yes I think we may have spoken;) if you were the guy with the Manfrotto monopod who said he came from (I think) Folkestone? I did not catch that it was a 40D attached to your Sigma!

Welcome to POTN Trevor. All the shots show signs of promise and nothing that practice won't perfect!

Lydden's a perfect track for panning practice. I even did some this week. It's a miracle!

Yes that's me. Ended up using the monopod as a walking stick:confused:

1/40 eh? I think I'll need more storage for luck like that:p ~ no seriously, I'd have to take a few hundred to get anthing acceptable that slow.

Thanks for the encouragement. I did notice the [cough] 20 something year old on the other side. (of the fence) Fortunately I had to leave early, so didn't get to experience the 'odour' that accompanied your bravery:lol:

Something to aspire to - thanks.
