From the Cliff at Uluwatu...
Sure its not the sharpest knife...
but the 70-200mm 2.8 + 2X is a great travel combo... Lots of options....

Uluwatu, you should have been in the water! I use a 300 2.8 with the 2x for travel and have had a lot of luck!

He used a 20D for that.

Yup,
20D was the body...
The auto focus is fine in decent lighting...
You will get TERRIBLE performance at first...
You just have to focus once and never let off lock because if you try to refocus it will back focus and you lose like 2 seconds of viewfinder time.
I surfed in the early morning and was just sitting at the warung( resturant) taking shots for a while until the tide got good to go back out. It was one of the better days in August.

haha
I think I'm going to rent a 300 f/4 and a 1.4x converter to shoot my friend surfing.

Another cheap way is the 300 f/4L with the 1.4X, I get great results, 420mm @ f/5.6 Yes I'd love the f/2.8 but we are talking cheapest here.

How about the Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 + 1.4X TC? Gives one a 420 f/4.0, which performs very well, for around $2,000 (if you buy used)

Rather just pony up and get the canon 300 2.8 for mabey another 1000$ used?
The zoom is not a neccecity for surf at all. It seems rad for field sports though!
ah lenses... always a head cruncher.

Mike, well even at $2K the Sigma isn't "Cheap" (note the title of the thread) and adding another $1,000 to the Sigma Solution (not a Robert Ludlum novel, although it sounds like one) makes it even more "un-Cheaper"
