Yesterday I took advantage of the offer from Adobe for CS. I am currently using Elements. I have a number of books that I bought to help me with Elements and was wondering what would be a good book to help me with CS.

I have Scott Kelbys book on Elements, I know he has one on CS too...do you think this would be a helpful book?

What do you think is the best book about using CS?

I think that Fraser & Blatner's "Real World Photoshop CS" is fantastic for getting tons of info about the way things work, and provide lots of detail in doing many advanced things. I would never recommend it to a PS-newbie though - it expects you to know some stuff. And I wouldn't recommend it if you "just want to get to work and get stuff done."

If you fit the last category, and know PS a bit (or Elements really well) then I'd get Kelby's Photoshop CS for Digital Photographers. It doesn't go in too deep, and expects you to know a bit at least, but will get you up into poweruser mode quite quickly. It's smaller than "Real World" but covers more things in ways that are almost as advanced, without all the details. If you know PS decently (or are good with Elements) then the PS Help can fill in the gaps rather quickly.

But unless you are quite comfortable with Elements I don't know if I could recommend either book for starting to delve into PS CS. Maybe a month from now.

I saw 'Real World Camera Raw' (by the same people) mentioned in another thread recently and now have it on order from Amazon. Apparently these folks really know what they're talking about. Maybe I have to call Amazon again.

Thanks! What do you like about this book? By the way, you've got a nice web site.

Adobe Photoshop CS Classroom In a Book is also a good one for walking you through many of the features of CS that are different from Elements.

The step by step approach, with images to edit, etc is very worthwhile.

Thanks! What do you like about this book?

Each example is well documented with dialogs and specifics. All the examples have good starting point numbers. He then explains what changes in the numbers will do. An example on how to soften a portrait will take you from start to finish with a downloadable example photo. Each example stands alone from the rest of the book. If you need to straighten a building, just read that section. This is not a tutorial on how to use Photoshop in general. It's a book on 'I bet you always wanted to know how to...'

Over the years I have bought many books on Photoshop, Scott Kelby's book prehaps is the best.
It has 'dirty' tricks, that get things done. A friend of mine has a sign shop, he could never enlarge digitally a small image for a large sign. Kelby shows how to do it.
In Canada with the tax it adds to $70 some dollars. Wish it was more reasonable!

"Adobe Photoshop CS Classroom In a Book" is the one I teach general PSCS from. It's a general, starter book that will get you up to speed on most of the PS features.
If you are only going to buy one book & don't care about general stuff, then I'd get Scott's.

Anything from the Friends of Ed series Masters of Photoshop is going to be awesome...by far my favorite photoshop books...

http://www.friendsofed.com/books/1590593154/index.html

but i find the best way to learn is to dive in, so that might just be me...

i hated the adobe books, the help files with the software teach you just as much...
