I am experiencing problems with my speedlite 420 ex. When I use it on Manual it fires without problems but when use it on ATTL mode, it gives the correct reading but doen'st fire. It fires when switching from one mode on the camera to another, or just to take the reading for the meter, but not when I take the picture. I tried different modes in the camera and different light settings, using autofocus and manual focus and it still not working. It can communicate with the camera, so I think I am doing something wrong. Do you have an Idea how to solve this or how to get the manual over the web.?????

Thanks

How are you using the flash? Directly on the camera via hotshoe or are you using a PC Sync chord?

When you say "it fires on Manual", are you refereing to the Manual setting of the camera or do you mean that you are manually firing the flash by pressing the "manual fire" button on the flash?

And, just as an FYI, the 420EX only works in E-TTL mode no matter what the camera is set to, manual or otherwise.

"ATTL mode" worries me.

Huh?

What camera are you using to force it to revert to A-TTL mode?

When I say manual I say that I change the mode on the Flash and then I can select the ratio of light i.e 1/1, 1/2, 1/4 etc. but triggering the flash from the camera. I used the flash first with a sync cable, then I test it directly on the camera to make sure what was wrong and it still doing the same behavior. With respect to the mode of the Flash, Im not sureabout what model it is, a 420ex or ez, but I can choose ATTL on theflash. Im using a digital rebel.

Tell me if more info is needed.

Thanks

Well, the 420EX doesn't support A-TTL, (TTL/E-TTL only), so I would assume you're using the older 420EZ (which has manual modes for fill flash reduction).

A-TTL mode does not work with Canon Digital SLR's.

Thanks for your response. What do you think is the average price of this unit on the street. I would like to get rid of it and buy a 550

Probably not more than 40-50 bucks:
