View Full Version : Buying a 10D or wait?

I am thinking about buying a 10D, currently using a drebel. The drebel does a good job but not being able to select the metering mode is getting to me. I know the replacemnet for the 10D is near. Is there any real reason to not buy a 10D? For those of you using one, are there any issues that would make you wait and see if they are resolved in the new version?

After I figure this out then I need to decide what new lens I want to go with it. The 70-200L or the 100-400L IS

If you need a 10D now, then go ahead and get it. I have the 10D now and the things I want "fixed" on it (like a bigger buffer, a much higher FPS rate and multiple cross focusing points) are the things that come in the form of a 1DmkII.

If you can wait, then you might be better off doing that since 1) with the announcement of the 10D replacement in a month (hopefully), the price of the 10D is bound to drop in price a little (it's already started to come down in price in some places), or 2) you can get a more up-to-date 10D-type camera.

In my case, I need another body but not that badly right now so I'm going to wait for the 10D replacement.

Just my 2 cents. :)

------And then, about fifteen minutes after the 10D Mk II is released (20D?), rumors will start about its replacement, and some people will be asking, "Should I wait?"

At some point you just have to jump it.

This late in its product life-cycle, however, could mean lower prices on the existing 10D, and that wouldn't be such a bad thing.

also take into account any new camera announced in september wont be getting properly distributed until 2005 (probably) - how long ago did the mk2 come out? people are still on lists for that in some places!

Yup... Canon's record for getting products into the hands of consumers isn't exactly stellar. D60, 10D, 1DMkII... they all had major supply problems after they were launched.

It almost makes sense as a marketing strategy for high-end items like the Mk II, but for items on the consumer end of the scale, things move too quickly, and people are far less apt to wait months for something like a Drebel (or D70). I would think that they might try to have reasonable quantities of the 10D replacement in stores before Christmas. If the 10D is already out of production (unsubstantiated rumor), then it could happen.

The fact is, very few English-speaking people know for sure, and those that do aint' talkin'.

wouldn't you be able to select metering with the hacked firmare on the DRebel?
If you really want to get the 10D, I think you should wait a couple months. The announcement of its replacement will affect the price of the 10d I think.

If I were in the same position, I would purchase the 10D now and then use the extra money (cost of new 10D model - cost you actually pay for older one now) and purchase one of the lenses you are interested in.

How many shots will you miss while waiting for the next 10D to available? What is the cost of that?

Just my $.02

WAIT!!!!!!

Ya wait, cuz the 10D II is somewhere hopefully close, then don't buy that and wait for the 10D III. So on and so forth..............

I think I'm probably gonna wait till it is announced and then buy 2-3 10D's from guys who forget that the 10D is a great camera. Good thing is, the price will probably drop hard, then go back up after people realize the 10D is still a very nice camera.

It been mentioned a million times, if you wait, you might as well just wait forever and never buy a camera.

Cheers.

Thanks for your thoughts. I think it comes down to a couple points made here. I do not really need the 10D, the drebel takes nice pictures just would like to have a couple more features.

It seems (if you take stock in any of the rumors) Canon has a big meeting in the next couple of weeks where they will anounce the new cameras. If they do have a replacment for the 10D it can only drive the price of the current ones down.

So I think I will wait and keep using the drebel for a while. I was going to keep it anyhow (have to have a backup ).

Now which lens to buy :D

I just went through the same dilema. Should I wait or buy now. After the Drebel came out (which I just sold mine for the 10D), prices in Canada for the 10D dropped for the next few months. In the last few months they dropped a little more but not a lot. Even IF a replacement is announced, most of us will still have to wait until next spring for one with Canon's record. I see there being a big price gap between the 10D and the 1DMKII. The 10D in Can is $1800 ish, the 1DMKII is $6000. I see the replacement fitting right in between there at around the $3000-$3500 mark, which is way more than I can spend on a body. That being said, my 10D will be here Tue and I picked up my new 70-200 F4L last night.

..Worry about the lens if anything. Out of all your camera bodies, the lenses will more than likely follow you through your transitions.

Stick with the Rebel and wait, it's not like you have 'no camera' or a 'crappy camera' right now.

I just picked up my 10D new for $1575 Canadian .. so I couldn't refuse.
I'd thought long and hard over this .. but you could wait forever. I feel the 10D looks way cooler that the 300D (my opinion). I have always prefered the black body since I opted for a black AE-1 back in '78.
So .. buy now (sell the Drebel before new stuff comes out) .. I'm sure you won't regret it.

Well I find myself back on the fence. The good thing is I have decide I am going to get the 100-400L IS. I know the 10D is a good camera and I know that its replacement will cost more. I can get one for $1199 from a dealer I can trust.

I guess I will decide when I get on the phone to order the lens. :D

Why do you think this? The 10D replaced the D60 for 25% less.

Jon,
Just a guess, If the new 10D comes out 25% less it would put it close to the drebel. I suppose they could reduce the price of the drebel to allow for that.

When the 10D came out it was the low end camera now the drebel fills that spot. With the drebel at the bottom and the 1D mkII at $5K it seems they could add features and pixels and price it between the two.

Just guessing on my part and I am wrong a lot (ask my wife) :)

In your estimate, how much value is the 10D likely
to retain/lose, after new version comes out?

Persian-Rice

Cadenza I would guess over time it will obvioosuly drastically drop, but my guess is in the area of 200-400.............I would think you should expect to pay $750-800 for a fairly new used one. Considering they go for around $1100 new right now, and the used guys are asking far too much at around the same price it costs to get a new one.
