I'm stuck choosing between these two legs. Which one does you guys recommend?
1. Manfrotto 190x
2. Manfrotto 3021

3021 is a little taller, a little sturdier, and a little more solid, but slightly heavier for packing around. 3021 is still my choice.

My choice is the Bogen/Manfrotto 3021BPro, now known as the 055ProB, topped off with the Manfrotto 488RC2 ball head.

The 190x can do horizontal column. Can the 3021 do that position?

The 190x can do horizontal column. Can the 3021 do that position? The "Pro" version of several of Manfrotto's tripods have the horizontal column capability, including the 3021BPro that I have (the "B" stands for "black").

The Bogen 3021 is now called the Bogen/Manfrotto 055 ProB. Still available under both names.

I would look at the 190XPROB and the 055XPROB as these are apples and apples. Both have the horizontal center column.
The 190XPROB is lighter and more compact. The 055XPROB is more sturdy and taller.
Both are great. Are looking for one to use travel outside and backpack with or are you primarily using for indoor use?
I actually have both for different needs.

The 3021pro is a fine tripod, nice and sturdy and not really that heavy I carried it around all day on my shoulder no problem

12"- 69 vs. 57 extended. 6" with the center column down (53 vs. 47").

IS the US version now called the 055ProB? I thought that was only on the manfrotto European version?
But I do agree with that choice exactly, hence why I have it.

The name on my 3021BPro tripod hasn't changed, though... :p

In choosing between the 190 and 3021 it comes down to height for me. I'm a tall guy and needed the height so went to 3021. Been a terrific tripod to date. I wouldn't go hiking with it, but for what I do it is perfect.

I have been reading this thread with great interest. I have a Lowepro Road Runner AW that I like to use to haul my gear around with. It's designed to carry a tripod on the side. I have a Bogen 3246 tripod with Bogen's 3275 gear head. I really love that tripod for stuido type setups but it's way too heavy/large to just carry around. I have been using a Benbo Treakker but, because of design, it's clumsy to attach to the Road Runner and clumsy to set up and really doesn't feel all that sturdy. Skip, you have been suggesting a Bogen 3021BPro often when someone asks for suggestions (now the 055ProB). I don't feel the need for the horizontal column capability (tried it with my Benbo, too unsteady for me). I don't need a new ball head, the Slik Pro has served me well for many, many years (like 30). I think I may just get a Bogen 055XB which seems similar to Skip's 3021BPro but without the horizontal column capability.

The 3021 or 055prob has the height advantage and really isn't that heavy. I have the popular 488rc2 ballhead, great combo. The height allows for greater stability because you likely won't need to extend the center column, and for me exactly six feet I can stand comfortably strait when using it.

3021 pro is fine for me & is biult rock solid. I just need to make a carrying strap from leather belts or webbing so I can go hiking easier.

You'd have a tough time replicating the swiveling adapter that threads into that hole.

Is this strap readily available? Are there any other clever ways to carry this heavier tripod for hiking?
I'd rather have an "all in one" solution, rather than multiple 'pods. but I don't yet know how much hiking I'll do or how comfy I'd be with the heavier tripod if I do a lot of hiking. I do think I'll need the taller tripod, since I'm about 6'1".

This model is the taller version of the 190XProB; which has the horizontal capabilities. However, unlike the 3021ProB, you don't have to unscrew the column in order to go to the horizontal setting of the center post. It seems to be a much smoother operation.

Karl, the 3021BN does not have the ability to mount the center column horizontally while the 3021BPro does. It's a feature that I have used a number of times and could not have supported my camera with the tripod without the feature. I would really suggest if you're in the market for a new tripod that you look at the 3021BPro (now being marketed in the U.S. with the international name 055ProB, though I would guess there is still 3021BPro stock available).

Thanks for the info. I could not figure out the difference. For $10 more (at B&H) it sounds like a useful feature.
Thanks :D

Can the 3021BPro aka, 055ProB do this?Actually, the current version of the 3021BPro/055ProB (ever since the two-piece center column was released) can get lower than your example, as the legs can go out totally level with the ground.
Using the center column horizontally can get the camera another three or four inches lower yet.
Using a shorter head can get the camera still lower as well.
Bottom line - using my 3021BPro/488RC2 combination, I can get my camera at least 8 inches lower than your example.
