Hey everybody, I was wondering if anyone owns/used a good eyepiece magnifier for Canon XTI?
Something that looks like this:

only not as expensive lol :(

Something to assist greatly in manual focusing primarily for macro shots and to some slight degree astrophotography.

Thanks for reading this thread, I hope its in the right section :)

The Canon Angle Finder C allows you to not only magnify the finder but see it from other than directly behind. This is ideal for macro and astro work.

For what your doing, angle finder would be best I think. I need an eyepiece for everyday stuff but I wanted magnification. Oh well, I think i'll just end up with the extender.

You can try the Nikon DK-21M eyepiece magnifier.

17% magnification factor and no cropping

fits on my 30D i think XTi as well

I also use the DK-17M as well with some adapters

This was the advice I was looking for. Not just go get a new one. Thanks!

Agreed. Magnification is also switchable. Check out the Hoodman version if you're on a budget. Check out Pro-Optic version if you're on a Raman budget.

I was looking into this a few months back, but kept reading about how the image quality is pretty bad with the Nikon eyepiece. Care to share your experience?

Only 1.17X maginification? I've got an Olympus AS-ME-1 Eyecup Magnifier http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-AS-ME-1-Eyecup-Magnifier-EVOLT/dp/B000CBSGYE . Its got 1.2X magnification but I never found it very useful at all. Would hardly know it was there except for the slight vignetting. An angle finder with 2X or 2.5X is much more useful IMHO.

Thanks everyone for the input, the Angle Finder C looks great, but still kinda pricey plus the right angle thing is not exactly what I was looking for, but it led me to this little beauty.

Canon's Magnifier S,
the only issue is that its discontinued, anybody know of any similar replacements?

Not really, no. :( There's always the Hoodman angle finder if you want to save a few bucks.

With the DK-21M on my 30D, looking through the new eyepiece did slightly help on the magnification part, I didnt notice any cropping at all but I found that the lens on the DK-21M to be smaller than my 30D VF. This meant I had to stick my eye right into it. Looked great - didn't even notice any contrast loss maybe very very slightly but nothing to worry about. So the eye piece lens is probably closer to the size of the VF on an XT/Xti.

The fit on the DK-21M eye piece onto the 30D was almost snug... but not a perfect tight fit. A slight annoyance but acceptable.

So I decided that I wanted a larger eye piece opening so looked into getting the MEA-17M/DK-17M combo with 21% magnification and the eyepiece lens is alot bigger.

I went to this site http://www.ircube.jp/main/product/mea/eng_kd.html

and found MEA-17KD, an adapter that accepted the DK-17M and fit perfectly onto my 30D - ordered it, got in about a week.

It's definitely better than the DK-21M but there is some loss of contrast.

Overall it performs pretty good, magnification is great, I keep it on 100% and my nose no longer greases up the LCD screen :)

Cost for DK-21M $35 at a local store
Cost for DK-17M + all the adapters necessary $90 shipped

For a 30D I would not go anything less than the 17M.
For the XT/Xti, choosing DK-21M is not bad.
