Just bought a Toshiba A70. Very nice notebook. I had no idea technology was this good. It picked up my wireless router instantly without doing a thing. Very cool! :D

Do you know how many other people are taking advantage of your wireless router?

If you see a guy parked outside your house and just playing with his laptop, he may be one of them.

Hehe yeah its rediculous how many people setup wireless access and forgetting the security so everybody can abuse their connection!

Denmark is one of the coutries that have most DSL connections compared to number of people living in the country. So You can just cruise around in Copenhagen and more or less have free internet access almost anywhere You go because people do not setup security, they just want the wireless access themselves fast and don't bother reading the manuals etc.

As for the subject, I recently had to buy a new pc which set me back approx $1700, yesterday I picked up a 1,4x extender and orded a Loweprod Nature Trekker AW II backpack at the same time :D And I still want a better WA lens and and and .......

I reached that point a couple weeks ago. In fact, I'm backtracking a little right now. I just sold my other 10D, and I'm probably going to unload a couple of the lenses I'm not using.

Of course, I'm also thinking that if I take the money from those, and put a few hundred dollars with it, maybe I can pick up a---

No! No! No, I must resist.....

Going slightly off-topic here, but... I have an ADSL router (not wireless). By default all security settings are OFF. You can even get into the configuration pages (with a browser) from the WAN side! So if you don't change the administrator password from the default setting, THE WHOLE WORLD  can hack around in the confuration of the router (if you know the default password)!! Stupid. I don't understand why these things are sold with all security off by default. I'm sure there are thousands of ignorant people who don't activate the security settings and change the admin password, so that their system is open to be hacked anytime....

With a wireless network you must certainly be careful to setup security correctly. Lately a computer magazine here did a test, they just drove around to find wireless networks. About 60% or so was readily accessible. They found all kinds of private documents, private letters, information on income and taxes etc. People are unknowingly putting all their private documents in their front garden for everyone to read!!

I had no idea about the security risk involved. I never even gave it a second thought. I was just excited about being able to use the notebook from anywhere I wanted.
Ok, so I'm a little naive. How do I secure my notebook against users on the roadside?

Well You are just doing as most are  As for how to setup the proper security You should refer to the manual to Your Wireless router. Perhaps post the name of Your router and someone may be able to guide You (not me  as I don't have a wireless router).

I have been reading up on it at the Linksys site. It tells me what has to be done but not how to do it. Ok then, out comes the manual then the phone call to the 1-800 number.

We've covered setting up and securing wireless networks here (http://www.drkeyboard.net/index.php) and here (http://forums.hardwareguys.com/ikonboard.cgi). You want to enable Wireless Protected Access and set up so you're not broadcasting your SSID as a start.
Disclosure - I'm an unpaid administrator at both of the computer boards above.

thanks Jon. I've changed my ssid already and I'll be sure to log in at one of the links you provided. I'm a tad buisy right now so I'll have to get to it later. See you then and thanks again. :D

There should also be a setting for "Don't broadcast my SSID". Checking that won't keep your laptop from connecting - it already knows it because you told it, but it will make it harder for outsiders to locate you, since you won't be advertising that "Conk-LAN" is out there. They may pick up a signal, but they'll still have to figure out what it's called.

Yes, I remember that. I did not check that box.
