Hi, Jim. Hope you and your sweet wife had a good New Year celebration. We stayed home with the boys. I'm not feeling all too well, and guess what? I have terrible tennis elbow from all the shooting. :(

Kathy, glad you see you are around still.
Thanks Suzie!
I am still around, but this is my slow time as far as taking photos and my full on rush time to get everything in my business taken care of for the years end.
The seniors that I shoot all year have to turn in their choice of photo for the yearbook by December 20 so that I can resize, crop and do any correntions on the images before the cut off date of January 8. Probably doesn't sound like a huge chore, but when you have over 1500 kids from 3 different schools to work with, it gets pretty crazy! I will be done with them by Friday afternoon if all goes as planned.
When this is all over with and springtime weddings start in, you will be seeing me around as a regular again.:D

Hi Suzie,
We went to Chicago to visit our oldest daughter and her family on the 26th. I now know why God gives you kids while you are young. We took Joe (age 6) and Jules (age 3) with us. After four days in the car driving to and from my eyeballs are revolving in opposite directions ;)
We had a wonderful time, however, and the "extra" Christmas on the 27th in Chicago was a real plus :D
The little guys got to see six inches of snow and really enjoyed that. Here are a couple of shots I made on last Friday...I was a 1st class wuss and shot these from the porch of my daughter's house :D
Hope you are feeling better soon :)

Thanks and Happy new Year :)
The kids had a ball with the snow...but my 30D is a "fair weather" camera body :) Besides, I'm a "sun bunny" and just do not like cold weather!

Cold today in VA. I had to wear gloves today to go to Costco. I hardly ever wear gloves. But my sister in Albany got tons of snow. She said the roads get cleared fast, though. If it snowed 1 foot here, in VA, we'd have a week of no school.

Cold here in OR too, but at least the wind isn't blowing.
I have a sick cat that I am taking to the vet in a few hours. I hate it when a baby or animal is sick and can't tell me what's wrong. She just lays there with big sad eyes and looks pathetic! It breaks my heart!:(

Good Morning All,
We had to cut short our vacation in Chicago in order to get back to Virginia ahead of the storm that nailed you guys. We left on Sunday and got home on Monday afternoon. We spent Sunday night in Newton Falls, OH watching football and surfing the 'Net...Newton Falls is in the middle of nowhere ;)
For the record...I hate snow with a passion!

Lisa, I wish I had known that as well! I love to meet members of our POTN family...I have had the privilege of meeting over a dozen members face-to-face in the past two years. We have a pretty active local "meet up" group here in NOVA thanks largely to Suzie & Jon...they are wonderful organizers :) As for Newton Falls I guess the big tourist attraction is the Ravenna Ammo Plant ;) The 44444 zip code is way cool!
We stayed at the Rodeway Inn just off I-80...two adjourning rooms (the grandkids in one and my wife & I in the other) for only $99.00! We also stayed there on the way out as well. Next trip I'll PM you and we can meet for dinner and say hello :D We go to Chicago to visit our oldest daughter about three times a year.

Jim, next time give me a shout, I'd love to meet you. I've only met a few. OO yes, the Arsenol. the only reason it's here is the cloud cover. We are cloudy I believe 78% of the year. it sucks. High rate of depression also, no joke! Not me, I could not be happier! Well, ok, I'd be happier in Arizonia or Israel or something, but if I have to be in Ohio, I'll be happy here also. Yes, I figured it was just off of 80, there's a nice Holiday Inn there also.

Got home from the doctor and I do have tennis elbow. I'm on anti-inflamatories for a while and then if it still hurts, shots. But, at least I was right. Have to stop twisting the arm and stuff. I need to do physical therapy so taking pictures is not painful.

Do businesses get extra time to file in the US? We get until July here, but you still have to pay by the deadline in April, so I'm not entirely sure what good it does anybody. Maybe for some businesses the extra time is helpful in some way.
I'm trying to figure out how to show on taxes that the start-up money for my business came from my husband, but I don't know if I can. Which sucks, because it really did come from his income. I was on mat leave half of this year and making crappy money the other half, and would have got all of my income tax back anyway. he, on the other hand, will have to pay a big chunk, so it would be nice to deduct the investment we made from his income. I should probably talk to an accountant...

Amanda, an accountant would be a big help. I have found that what I pay mine is well worth it. He knows how to do it right so if you get audited he has you covered. I would think that the money from your husband for your business would be called a loan, your business would show how it was used and the deductions from that might balance out the total wages recieved for him so he wouldn't have to pay as much tax on it. It's all so hard to explain! Talk to an accountant! Is your husband self employed?
I have a business, my husband has a business, and I have a job. All of the earnings and deductions go in the same pot in the end at tax time, so if either of us gained or lost to much, it balances out pretty well usually.

Ouch, Suzie! How did you get "tennis elbow" by using your camera? I hope it clears up very soon and you are back fit as a fiddle :)
My only camera related physical issue is fatigue. At the end of an all day wedding gig I am just bushed! My New Year's resolution is to exercise (walking) more in order to get into better shape.
Anyone who thinks photography is a physically easy job ought to shoot a full day wedding. Emotionally and physically it will just drain off your energy.

Jim you are so right on the weddings being exhausting. Besides the wedding day itself, the before hand stress of being perfectly prepared and then the afterwards PP work is enough to make me need a long nap!

He's self-employed, I have a business, we have a business together, and I'm employed. He's going to switch his own clients over to the business that we have together this month so that we can split the income more evenly. Right now his income is about 85% of our income and it doesn't all get pooled together. We had been holding off so that only he would have to charge GST, but at this point it's not benefitting us anymore, and I could use the GST rebates as well. I thought about putting it on the books as a loan from him, but that's what I want to check with an accountant about and whether it's the correct way to do it or if it is possible now since we have no documentation of it.
The doctor thinks that was a straw that broke the camel's back, to speak. I had been trying too hard for the holidays and I guess I over did it. It's quite swollen.
well, I hope you're feeling better soon and don't need the shots!

Oh, I would love a bridal show! I enjoy those. I did a family-newborn shoot the Sat. before Christmas and that did it. I was holding the gear too long. The next day, I couldn't move the arm. When people ask if it hurts, well, imagine not being able to pour anything or twist anything without screaming. :) Yes, feel bad for me. So, arm band on, scarf around the neck to rest the arm close to the body, no cooking, no cleaning, no pictures for about a week. If it doesn't clear up, I am in trouble. Being here doesn't help either, but at least I rest my arm on the laptop panel.
Oh, I reconfigured my set-up, Jim. Got the new Dell laptop with the 22 inch Samsung behind the sofa, attched to 2 hard drives, the new Epson RX595 All-in-One and PictrureMate. Got the two Bose speakers on the sides, all plugged into the APC battery back-up. Try doing that with one arm! :)

Sweet :) I have the 22 inch LCD monitor on my "wish" list.
Right now I am beginning my research for a UWA L lens to go with my soon to be purchased 5D. I am looking at the 17-40MM f/4 EF L or the 16-35MM f/2.8 EF L Mark II. The question is is the 16-35MM that much better to pay twice the price over the 17-40MM???
Anyone here have any thoughts?

Not that this is really helpful, because I don't have either, but I looked at both and decided to go 17-40 for now. Eventually I'd like to make it my back up to the 16-35, but it was too steep for me to swing right now since I also have some other expenses coming up.

You can never have too much monitor for image editing. The more you get, the more you want. And once you get that big monitor, it's very difficult to ga back to anything smaller. I find myself getting frustrated with my 17" MacBook Pro; I won't even attempt it with my 13" MacBook. Truth is, I'm using a 30" Apple Cinema Display at home, and have even had a second monitor hooked up to that computer at various times.
Good luck on the senior shoot. Hopefully the weather will cooperate.

Tom that is so true....everytime I have to do anything on a smaller monitor, I find myself moving at all angles to find a place where it looks okay..closer, farther, left, right, shut one eye, LOL Nothing helps though.
The senior shoot is off for today, client just called and wants to reschedule for a better weather day. Good luck on that, it will probably get worse before it gets better.
The appointment did get me out of going to the woods to help my husbands company move heavy equipment from one job site to another though, so it is not really a let down day.lol
My brother took some pictures of the partial move yesterday, I'll get one up here so you can see all the fun I missed out on! UGH!

Here's a couple from yesterdays move. The tires on that machine are nearly 6 feet tall. When I go I usually get to be the lucky body that gets to stand on the trailer deck and direct the driver, who can't see where he is going from up in the seat. Talk about stressful...I HATE it! One wrong direction and the machine is on it's side! Excuse the poor quality of these shots, I'll be dammed if I'm going to do PP work on these kind of shots! lol

Amanda,
Thanks for the input. I agree with you. I looked at 100s of photos on pBase and the 17-40MM looks great to me. It really is f/2.8 v. f/4 decision I think. The real good news is that I have enough AMEX Reward points to get the 17-40MM at no cost :) A 5D for $2.1K plus a "free to me" 17-40MM EF L is a sweet deal :)

It's a delimber. It picks up a tree/log and the butt of the tree stops at the back plate then the arm slides down the tree and slices the branches off.
It is just one of many contraptions they use. It is pretty much a "no-waste" operation. They don't clear cut any of the land, just thin it for better regrowth. The bigger trees are used as saw logs to make lumber for building, smaller trees are used for poles, short and small or branches and breakage for firewood or chip wood.

Lisa B.Don't worry. We're sending some weather your way. It's raining here today (lightly), and that's very unusual. We usually see very little rainfall. In fact, we had a storm through here a couple weeks ago that dropped some rain. It wasn't a significant amount, certainly less than an inch. Nonetheless, it was equal to all the precipitation so far this year, and all of last year combined.
We have a row of mountains immediately to the west and south of us, and they tend to block the weather coming in off the ocean.
The irony is that we're susceptible to flash flooding here. The rain falls in the mountains and funnels down into the desert. We have washes (natural spillways) that fill up very dramatically and occasionally spill over their banks, even when we've had no rain here.

How are you Kathy (Grace)? I've been wondering if the wedding crowd is still around. Seems like most have left.
Jim, the 17-40 is a great lens, but only outdoors. I've tried it indoors and it's hard to work with even with flash. Doable, but I usually use the 24-70 for most indoor shots. If you want to try mine, I'll bring it along next time. Jon is bringing his tubes and if you still want to try the picturemate, just ask.

No issue. Just with the 5D, it's too wide. So the 24-70 is plenty wide, you would have everyone looking weird and out of proportion. So, the 30D with 17-55 and the 5D with 24-70 is the same. If I were you, I'd do the 24-70 on the 5D and 10-22 on the 30D as you said. I hardly ever go wider than 35mm close up, otherwise the people are on the wide side on the ends. This is why I wish I had 2 5D's to have the 24-70 on one and the 70-200 2.8 IS on the other for indoors. That's what David had in UT for Brandon & Sarah's reception. He had the 5D with the 70-200 and the 1DMKIII with 24-70 on the Custom Bracket. Nice and heavy, but what a set up.

Suzie, I read the entire thread just now...very, very interesting ;) I'm not sure what to make of it? I didn't find the comments derogatory at the beginning but it did evolve into a heated discussion quickly. Overall I think the photos were flat and boring...it just wasn't what I would expect to see for wedding photography.

There seems to be an edginess to many of the wedding photography discussions that borders on ugliness, and I'm at a loss to explain it. I'm from the old school that believes there are two ways to say everything; honesty does not have to be brutal.
For some reason, there seems to be an occasional need among our wedding crowd to be exceedingly blunt, and then indignant when the recipients of their 'candor' react badly. I've seen this pattern repeated over and over, and it's sad.
Part of it can be attributed to the fact that we're communicating in a written medium, and we don't all possess the same abilities to convey a state of mind. Some of it might be manifestation of the competitive side of human nature, and it might just be jealousy in some cases.
It's unfortunate, but that just seems to be the nature of things in the wedding community more so than just about any other discipline represented here on POTN.

This is so very true, Tom. Constructive criticism is a good thing and it should be accompanied with suggestions for improvements if appropriate. In the course of the past three years I feel that my photography skills have advanced significantly based in large part to the comments and criticisms I have received here on my work as well as reviewing the C&C on other photos posted in the forums.

Just got back home from having my few moments with Jon at the A&S in Dulles. He was testing his new 300 f4. I'm so jealous, except I was testing out the 40D, but no 6.5 frames, nothing moving there. :(
I always enjoy meeting POTN members because I learn so much. Jon is a wealth of information, he is totally cool and has so much gear, I was afraid he'd drop a few things out of his bag, like his 5D. He's so familiar with all the cameras and setting and specs. I'm always amazed. The WF members are all so talented and have a lot to offer, so well chosen criticism is worthwhile here. I've really benefited from the advice people give me and the exposure to new methods and strategies. I hope that continues here.

I saw several folks with P&S in the lobby and one fellow with a Nikon and a backpack full of gear. Inside the Opera House I saw one couple shooting the family before the show started. Then the lights went down and the announcer came on and said "No photography or we will take your house away, your first born, etc, etc, etc).

I've been my current home for 7 years and I think I have 20 years of stuff. How does that happen? We've always had a lot of 'junk', but the problem really became acute last July. My wife's aunt in New York passed away, and we inherited all her furniture. We moved almost all of it out here even though our house was already overly full. All the overflow ended up in the garage, and that just compounded our difficulties out there. Add to that all the brother-in-law's things we're storing for him out there plus all the detritus of many years of conspicuous consumption.
I'm encouraged, though. Lois (wife) says we have to get rid of it all. Or course that doesn't mean everything literally, but a lot of it.
Pray for me.

Oh, you asked about the Think Tank. I love the bag. It holds almost half my gear, allowing me to have the Adventure 9 bag for my laptop and 5D with 24-70 attached. That is my most needed set up so I have it in the Adventure 9 in case I have to put the bigger bag down below in the plane. It happened when I went to the Albany meet and the plane was one that only fit a few people. The fact that I can have a nice carry on that is large enough to fit 2 camera bodies and 4 lenses and 2 flashes is well worth the $350 I paid for it, and it is so well built, you can't believe it. Also, there are a lot of partitions that come with it so you can do any configuration you need.

Do you use the Think Tank for A/L flights only? Or do you use it on location as well? I am looking for the "perfect" bag to hold 2 bodies, 4 lenses, and 2 flash units.

Hello there young lady :D - yup we got hammered pretty well yesterday. I did my errands in the morning and by noon the roads reminded me of driving I-90 to Buffalo in a blizzard!

Omgosh, a few years ago, I was up in Buffalo doing some work, I was at a mall, and they actually closed it down, told us, "we could not leave" I thought...SHOOT, I'm from Ohio,I've seen snow, so I left the mall for my hotel about 20 minutes away. 4 HOURS later I finally got there, I've NEVER seen so much snow fall so fast. They actually closed that outerbelt with people on it for 36 hours, I had to stay over an extra day because there was no way to get out.
I had pics, but there are long put away now.

Yeah, Buffalo is something else. Back in '79 we came through there on the way home from our honeymoon. We were some of the last cars to come through before they closed the NY Thruway. We did 3 miles in 6 hours. Poor Buffalo had been hit with 36 inches of snow in 24 hours.
It took a while for them to plow our streets, and then after our plow left I still had to go out with the snow blower. We even received automated calls from the police department saying there was a snow ban in effect and all cars had to be off the streets. I shot this picture about 9 A.M. today. I was amazed how pretty it was compared to yesterday afternoon.

Nice shot!
Hi everyone!
When I saw this was up, I was shocked. I thought people forgot about it. I'm glad to see you are all well. I've got a stomach bug so I'm at home. Hope everyone else is doing better.

Hey Suzy.
I think Kathy H revived it, not sure. It'd be nice to see a few more people pop in before it sinks to page 12 again. :-)

I've been posting just a few a day recently. Not much going on here except for when the forum was down. That was a scare for me. :)
I can't believe how many people are asking the same questions over again without searching. I think I counted 3-4 threads a day asking which 70-200 was best. I think the moderators are stopping that recently. Threads get closed and links put up.

Thank you Suzy - great hearing from you!:D Although really sorry to hear about the bug you have....... not a lot of fun. By wife had something for a couple of weeks but seems to be much better now. Drink a lot of ginger ale - that always seems to help; must be the curative properties of the ginger. Homemade chicken soup is always good too ;).
Nice shot!

I come here to search before I search the web. I think new people have no concept of searching and older people just like to talk. LOL and are lazy to not want to search, but want answers NOW, kinda like fast food. Gotta have it NOW and hot!

I guess I'm guilty of this sometimes, but I now know I read the topic somewhere, so I search hard. Just recently, I couldn't find the thread, so I PM poor Leo, I think. He had it for me in about a minute. And I did search first. But sometimes, when the topic is so obviously over-done, people don't answer anymore.
BTW, since reading this thread again, I think I'm ordering the Pelican that Maureen has. I need another bag to take stuff to Denver and my son and I can't carry everything in the bags I have. I also have weddings to do and the Pelican looks like a good purchase.

Well, Stu....maybe it's time to unload and sell a few things on the forum or Ebay.
