I think you'll enjoy it Chris - I just picked one up a couple of months ago. I haven't used it much yet but it's really "bright;" love that shallow DOF too :D.

Whoo hooo! My newest order from B&H just shipped. It's only an 85 f/1.8, but I'm going to enjoy that lens. I think I might go ahead and order a tripod this week, too.

My youngest just started guitar lessons today. Brought the little guitar and it was toooo small. My guitar was toooo big. So, my 10 year old said, "Why not let him use mine? It's just right!" :)

And I also signed on for the free 14 day trial of SmugMug Professional. Hopefully, I can figure it out. :)

How sweet!
I play the keyboard and the trumpet. Hope the girls play something too...piano or guitar. My sister plays the flute, and my brother plays the drums and guitar. My dad plays the guitar too. We love music.

My 4 boys play the piano, and well. Even my 8 year old is good. They all play 2 instruments, as it is a requirement here in our home. I want them to enjoy it when they are older. My older two sons can sit down at the piano and play just about anything, sight-read anything and plunk it out. They aren't brilliant, but good. And my 10 year old is really good. He just won 2nd place in a competition. He can be brilliant if he decides to be. We love music, all kinds. We listen to so many types of music, my kids even liked the opera concert we went to last weekend.

Thats good! I want my children to be given an opperturnity to enjoy the arts. My 2yo is already in dance class. I hope they both enjoy dance and playing instuments when they are older. My husband woudl like them to be sports stars...and I think he might win with my 2 y/o. She already likes basketball.

My 9month old already loves music. She 'sings' with the raido and tv alot!

I'm sure, Chris, that you love playing despite the weirdness of conductors. We had a major uproar in the local orchestra due to the new management. It was so ugly. About 1/3 of the members left and formed their own orchestra. It was sad. The original orchestra is sounding less wonderful, but still good, but the support has just been hard to get. I feel like sometimes musicians are completely too artistic and have big heads, and sometimes they just don't understand anything about what goes on behind the scenes as far as keeping the orchestra in the black. So, I have a hard time with the whole conductor vs. musicians thing. I wish people could just live together! :)

Typically I do, but the last conductor made me dread going into rehearsal. It was just his expectations for a community orchestra of our nature were outright unreasonable. That, and running a "sound check" right before a concert that ended up being more of a full dress rehearsal. Beating your orchestra down an hour or so before a concert is not good. But he left and we've got a wonderful conductor now!

Just got back from the auditions. They were interesting. The kids are pretty good overall. One amusing moment. One 13 year-old made an interesting typo in her essay. She wanted to say that she's been playing with the Mason Youth Orchestra. Instead, she wrote that it was that "Mason Meth Orchestra." Now there's a vision. "Learn to make drugs while playing John Cage*...it'll make the music sound better!"

*for those that don't know, John Cage is a very contemporary composer known for things such as putting thumbtacks on the hammers of pianos, symphonies for tuned radios, etc.

I majored in music ed for ONE semester. It was teh worst semester of my life. Am I grateful for all the theory, skill and other information i obtained? Absolutely.

I had the mose arragant trumpet teacher. He was so full of hot air, made me dread going. I loved band in highschool and looked forward to it...then i dreaded rehersal.

Now I am just as happy sitting in my church orchestra everyweek, alongside of my hs band director. (we have a LARGE band program here...over 200 10-12 graders..we are well known throughout the state)

I have yet to meet a trumpet player that wasn't full of hot air. ;)

There's some truth to the joke, "How many trumpet players does it take to screw in a light bulb? 40. One to screw it in and 39 to stand there and say how much better they could have done it."

Great lens, Chris...

I can't wait to see what you are going to do with that... Hurry, go take a picture of something...

I'm impressed, doctorate, violin and now the 85.... Life is good at times isn't it!

Ok...back to work for me, I just came up for air, I NEED to get these done tonight so I can attend my sons game tomorrow night.!

Well, I'd go take pictures if it was here. :p

My problem is that I have too many interests. There's a lot more beyond the violin and the piece of toilet paper (but I won't bore people with them). ;)

I sing and I play the piano. When I was a teenager, I played the organ for Sunday services but I wasn't very good. They were just desperate. I haven't touched the organ since. I taught myself. Now I sing, but don't do it as much as I'd like. The Mormon Choir of Washington is wonderful, but I can't do it right now. I'm too busy with my kids.

I see the importance of engagement sessions...this couple was very use to us and what we wanted, they knew what we wanted and were so easy to pose and body movement and a couple times they even said "see we remembered"

I'll be posting their story on my blog, she's an amazing young lady and law student, suffered major tragedy in her life a few years ago but has really moved on.

I'ts been an honor to know them both. He too is amazing for standing by her!

Well, that is quite evident here :D.

Just got done framing the 3 pieces for the Butler show, and the one shot for the JCC. I just have to put wire on the backs, and then some ID/descriptive info. I've decided to donate three framed photographs to the WVIZ Auction - it's a good cause (my people ) and I figure it should provide some good "free" promtional advertising on TV.

Jackie is a cool lady. Stunningly beautiful. Ive known her for about 2 years now and was excited she was going to let me do some maternity shots. I played football with her husband a few years ago so we're pretty comfortable around eachother. Teasing, and having some laughs.

Here is one of Pablo kissing the tummy.

I usually will have one or two faves from each shoot but this one every shot seemed to be stellar. I was very happy.

I spoke to Dave Terry in UT yesterday about starting a SmugMug Professional account and did it. Then I called him to clarify something and he told me he uses the 100-400 for sports, which was what I was considering because my 70-200 is too short for the large field. Anyway, I went to Amazon and they had it for $1310.00 while B&H had it for $1410.00. So, I pulled the trigger! WHAT DID I DO? I didn't even consult my family? Oh, I'm in trouble now! But it's not in stock. When it is, though, they charge me. Oh, I'm hoping it doesn't come up today.

Boy, does THAT sound like a good idea Chris. I had the same issues for some reason. I was pretty tired after framing, but maybe my subconcious is working overtime being aggravated about the upcoming downsizing.

Yesterday was a long day. We drove to Phoenix and back.....500 miles. For some reason, the trip really wore me out, although it was a relatively leisurely drive.

Anyway, I barely made it back in time to tuck Lisa in last night. I'll try to do better.

That sounds like a good deal. I'm a great believer in that particular lens, and couldn't imagine life without it. I dropped mine once (actually, it rolled out of the truck onto the ground.) It still zoomed and autofocused, but it wouldn't focus manually, so I had to send it in and spend $300 getting it repaired. Fortunately, none of the glass was affected. The lens is perfect again, and continues to produce some of my favorite shots. I think the range would be ideal for sports.

But I must point out that you presume too much; your work will never be done. We will always be getting into technical fixes and calamitous conundrums that will require you sharp expertise and warm wit to shine a guiding light along the right path ;).

As for the other, I find that naps are worth their weight in gold.

Thanks, Stu. I'm sure there's a nap coming at some point today, although now that I'm up and moving, I'm starting to feel like my old self (very old, actually:lol:).

I'm not a wedding photographer. Never will allow myself to be put in that position. I have grown very fond of the regulars in this thread, however, so I doubt I'll be going anywhere soon. There is a dynamic among some wedding photographers that is unhealthy, and we saw that in spades here a few months ago. I'm determined not to allow that to happen again. Fortunately, all the people who were most disruptive have gone elsewhere, and we're free to start over without their particular brand of unpleasantness.

Huh, glad I was wasn't here during that. I have to agree with you, Tom. I understand what you are saying Tom, although there was an amount of expertise and talent that left with them. Both sides lost, from that standpoint, but it's water over the dam and we move forward, onward and upward :D.

I love wedding and social event work. But I have always done other types of photography too, for as long as I can remember. Lately since going digital back in '05 I am rediscovering parts of our fair city that would have been prohibitively expensive to photograph had I still been using film. Digital has enabled me to experiment and take risks that my cheap self would not have permitted with film.

So when I get the wedding and bar mitzvah bookings, I gungho throw myself into those. And when that work is slim, I continue to volunteer for the local PBS station and wander the streets with camera in hand.

But I think that's a great thing that's REALLy appealing about our current cadre here - we are all multifaceted folk :D. We do lots of different stuff. We have lots of different backgrounds. We interact with lots of different people. And that just makes this a richer place in which to hang out, chat and commiserate.

Hmmm.... gets idea in head, scantily clad by too little hair. So what do we call this place anyway? "Belmondo's Bar?" What do you think folks? ;)

Thanks, Stu. I'm sure there's a nap coming at some point today, although now that I'm up and moving, I'm starting to feel like my old self (very old, actually:lol:).

You didn't miss a thing. All the troublemakers are gone. Unfortunately, they took a few good people with them, but I'm hopeful they'll be back someday. Sooner or later, they'll get sick of the bickering and hopefully remember that friendliness is an official policy here.

Well, don't wind down too quickly young man, and don't sell yourself short either. I would venture to say that a number of folks would disagree with the level of self involvement that you feel ;). You are a portion of the acetate base under our silver halide coating.

Morning all.....or should i say afternoon as it is 11:30here.

I'm waiting on Fed Ex with my miller's order.

A few weeks ago my family's automotive business received some tornado damage...well mainly to the office. The paneling ceiling and floor are having to be replaced...and on one of those walls was several bumper stickers that my cousins and I had decorated throughout the years. My grandmother would never replace it...so now that I had to come down, I took a photo of it and am going to frame it. I printed it on metallic paper and put a luster coat on it. I can not wait to see it and it's coming today!

here it is. The frame is a photo of me as a baby and the art is something i made in preschool Still there after the tornado. It use to be purple....

Nice shot Stephanie - she has a very nice, natural looking smile.

Obviously you put her at ease and made her feel comfortable. It shows in the image. You know the old saying about photographing folks: it's about 25% tech skill and around 75% people skill :D.

Thanks!

Wonder if my wife will approve of me buying a 5D + 70-200 f/2.8 IS because it'll get my arm muscles in shape before the baby arrives.

I have the 40D with 70-200 2.8 IS sometimes with the grip at soccer games. I do get a workout. People know me now, "The Chinese lady with the white lens." Well, I can't say it's light. That 70-200 2.8 IS is a killer! But so worth it. No, not exercise for me, but more like tennis elbow. I take ibuprofen for it.

Wow!! Tornadoes. We're spoiled out here.....we just don't get those. We only have to deal with oppressive heat, occasional sustained high winds, flash floods, grass fires, and of course, earthquakes. This is paradise.

Morning Lisa - taking a quick coffee break here, and then back to ordering network equipment :(. Actually, it's a picture accepted into the JCC show, and then one image accepted by the Sight Center that they will reproduce as one of their holiday cards.

You know, I've seen that about the RSS feeds..... how do I hook that up or subscribe so I know when other folks update?

I use: NetNewsWire but I think it is mac based....I know google has an rss feed, you can also just save them in your favorites and it will let you know when someone updates their blog, pbase, webpage. I'm addicted, I have over 50 people I watch. It's cool and you no longer have to check their pages for updates, it lets you know right away when someone updates.

Mornin' everyone.

Yesterday was a long day. We drove to Phoenix and back.....500 miles. For some reason, the trip really wore me out, although it was a relatively leisurely drive.

Anyway, I barely made it back in time to tuck Lisa in last night. I'll try to do better.

As a general note, I'm pleased to see the new faces here, and I'm especially pleased to see the work you are all doing.

Amen. There aren't enough derogatory words to describe my dislike of Lipton's from the fountain. I grew up on brewed teas (and as a completely bizarre Southerner, I can't stand sweet teas for the most part).

I've never drunk tea. Don't like it. I didn't like coffee much as a youngster, but acquired a taste for it in the Navy. Lois grew up a tea drinker, but seems to have drifted gradually over to plain old black coffee with me. Once in a while she'll have a cup of tea, but I really think it's for nostalgia purposes only.

You're doing a lot better than I am. I don't like the taste OR the smell of tea. I tried to like it. I spent a whole afternoon in a tea shop that sold bulk tea. I must've tried a hundred different varieties. I finally decided I was looking for something that tasted just like coffee, and that wasn't going to happen, so I gave up.

I will occasionally drink green tea if I'm in a Chinese restaurant.

Green tea is really good for you, too. The flavonol antioxidants (epicatechin) that are contained within green tea protect one against a couple of types of cancer, high blood pressure, and a couple of other things. Flavonoids of similar structures are what make dark chocolate, soy, and red wine so good for you as well. If memory serves, black tea also has some flavonol antioxidants, but not as many as in green.

Yes, that is what I did my Ph.D. research in. No, I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

This ends my geekspeak for the day.

Hi All,

I did my first Lacrosse match last night...took a couple of hundred photos...walked the sidelines for 2 1/2 hours...got home at 10PM...downloaded my files to the PC and backed them up and went to bed.

I used the 5D & 85MM f/1.8 and the 30D & the 50MM f/1.4. Got some awesome shots...but, alas, I have put them all away as I catch a plane to San Antonio, TX at 0900 tomorrow. 2 days in San Antonio on business and then back to Chicago for for a long weekend with the Grandkids there :) I will have lots of PP work when I get back :(

I'll back Springfield late on Monday night.

So do you know how hard it is to take a 2y/o and a 9month old to walmart? Yesterday I went grocery shopping had the older one in the large part of the buggy and the baby in the small part...i had forgotten my baby carrier. I have about 4 so why i don't have one with me at all times is beyond me. So i forgot baby formula...had to go back today and onceagain...forgot a baby carrier. We are home now, and neither wanted to take a nap...so that makes for an interesting evening. I haven't had time to edit any photos today. Hope I can tonight.

Anyway.

I feel like i need to go to monitor calibration school. I'm using a spyder pro, and have a totally different color on my laptop vs my desktop. Makes it frustrating on which is 'right'

Problem is the $!@)#$*%@ car manufacturers have squandered valuable years not developing them, they are hard to find, the dealerships are charging obnoxious premiums on top of sticker just for the priviledge of buying one. So all that gas savings goes out the window for several years.

We had one of those, and drove it till the wheels fell off it.

Actually, they never fell off. It had 230,000 miles on it, and still ran like a sewing machine. We were in Reno one weekend, and the vibration damper on the crankshaft broke. Yup. The Wrangler was designed from the frame up to be cost-effective to manufacture. It's a neat little car, and I'd be happy to own one, but a CJ is a very different animal, and (IMHO) a more rugged and serviceable design.

We have the truck, and it stays parked most of the time. The Lexus gives us pretty good mileage, but requires premium. The last fill-up was about $60.00.

I detect a modest change in lifestyle coming.

Let me take a wild guess: 4barrel 350 cu in displacement, 325hp?

Close. The 350 ci's didn't show up until later on past 67 (this is a '65). This is a 327 ci, 300hp, 4bbl. Original motor.

Very nice car. Except for a succession of Cadillacs in 1972 74, 76, 77, 79, and 81, I've never been much of a GM guy. I did own one Corvette, a 1978 Silver Anniversary Special, and it was a dog. It was a California car, and even though it had the L82 engine, it had the mandated smog pump, and automatic transmission, the only way the car could be sold in the Golden State. It rode like a buckboard, and would barely get out of its own way. My Porsche 944 Turbo was much quicker (and it would corner).

I know that was a bad time for Corvette, especially in California. The cars before and after that era were much better.

Yours is a classic.

Actually, I almost forgot the first car we bought after we were married...1958 Chevrolet Bel Air 2Dr hardtop. 283 Turboglide. Another pig.:lol::lol: Wish I had it now.

Well, I wasn't too far off... closest thing I had was the '67 2-door granada gold Impala I got from my dad, with the 195hp, 283 ci engine and 2-speed powersludge tranny.

If I recall correctly, 0 - 60 was 2 hours, 31 minutes, 14 seconds .

Yeah, the mid 70s until the redesign on 84 were really bad for the Corvette name. I know I wouldn't want one. I'm also partial to the body style that I've got.

My father bought the car new, which is a nice piece of family history to have (if it weren't for the car, I can honestly say I wouldn't be here). He raced the hell out it, but took care of it (still mostly original). Getting it back on the road was the last thing he and I were able to do together before he passed two years ago.

Yup. That makes it very special.

This one isn't the fastest in the pack, but it gets 20mpg on the highway due to the gearing in the differential. Nice cruising car.

That is EXACTLY what my dad owned before the Impala Tom, except it was the 135hp straight 6, white on top with sierra gold on the bottom.... gorgeous two tone vehicle; rusted out like hell though by '67.

Poor dad should have owned stock in Bondo.

Kathy (Grace), that is a beautiful shot. Good to hear you got your new computer. I just bought the 100-400 and really wondering if I should have gotten another laptop 13 inch for travel. This 17 inch weighs 10 pounds and is killing me. You enjoy that new computer and click away!

And, Chris, that car rocks! I saw so many people drive their motorcycles and convertibles on Saturday and it was great. I wish I had one. But I'm a soccer Mom. I have at least 5 more years with a minivan.

yeah - morning Tom. I was stunned by my looks in the bathroom mirror earlier.... ought to make a law against that sort of thing. Good thing the glass is double strength....
