800!!! what's your hit/miss ratio like?
Is that the total amount of shots you took, or the total amount of good hits?
There are two of us, we generally shoot around 1300, that is narrowed down, now I will PS some and delete more..I like to give around 500 or more.

Clear your Internet Cache and delete your cookies... then try again. If it's IP based and you have a dynamic internet connection, reset your modem to pick up a new ip and try again....

You guys have to check this out..this is the maid of honor from the wedding I just did on Saturday..
She was in the states cross country in Columbus...It was a BIG deal and must have been because she fell and broke her leg, (so bad they had to put a rod in for her to ever walk again...
Forward to around 2 minutes..she literally crawled across the finish line and of course never made it to her sisters wedding.

I'm sure they have a help file about it. I'm normally not a computer moron, but I really don't understand what it's telling me.

I'm jumping into this late and I'm not quite sure what you're talking about but I'm assuming your web site and your web stats.
It all depends the package you are using for stats but a lot of the time a "hit" could refer to any element on the page being "hit" so for example if your main page has the page, your logo as an image, another image on it, and maybe just regular text links (very very simple example) that would count as 3 "hits" as 3 separate things had to be downloaded, the page file and 2 image files. With this example you can see how "hits" can rise quickly.
One thing to look for are unique visitors and visitors as well. A unique visitor logs that visitor by it's IP address and logs it as 1 unique visit no matter how many times that person comes to your site for a period (usually a month) and the visits are usually how many times people come to your site (so this would be higher than uniques).
And if this isn't what you are talking about I may have just confused you even more.

This is exactly why my gf has instituted a Sept (early Oct) only rule on going to Green Bay to watch any games. We went on Nov 19 last year and froze (tailgate/walk to game/game in 0-5C weather). We then went to the Sept 23 game this year and it was somewhere between 20-28C all day.
So now she's allowing me to go again next year but early.

That's exactly what I was talking about, and actually things make more sense now. that explains the multitude of hits. Could "uniqe sites" be the same as unique visitors? That would make everything make total sense. Just trying to understand the data so that I can keep track of how many people are finding me and how they are. thanks for explaining that stuff.

The server I've used in the past didn't offer a neat and organized way to get that info. Just a list of IP addresses and pages they visited, which I rarely looked at. but I wanted to make sure I had a server that offered site stats so that I can try to keep track of it as it will be my main marketing tool.
How are you doing today?

It's possible to be the same but it could also possibly be the number of unique sites sending people your way. Hard to tell without knowing the program you're using and the way it's in use. Tomorrow when I'm home (working nights right now) I'll take a screen cap of one of my sites top little info thing and explain what each section means. My site uses AWStats for it's stats package.

Depending on who your web host is you should be able to log into your site's control panel at a url like www.mysite.com/cpanel (or possibly even through your hosts main page, there might be a ussername/password area). Once in your control panel area there should be some link somewhere giving out visitor data, I can't even remember what the actual name of mine is for the link to all the data and options from there. cpanel is a control panel name/program; depending your host they may be using something different.

Mine appears to be something called Webalizer. It lists both sites and referers, and sites have IP addresses listed, so I think sites=users. I would appreciate any education on this. :D I'm okay with some web stuff, but i've never done this before.

Sites definitely = users then. I've had a little experience with Webalizer but this was awhile back. I'll look into it as well as AWStats and give a little crash course on both (you might have to remind me from time to time).

Nice one Cujo, just read through your explanations, and I think you've covered most of it.
As far as recommendations go, i'm currently using AWStats too, and i think it's fantastic with the amount of detail it allows you to get at.
I'm sure i've got Webalizer running on my server too, so i'll grab a print screen shortly and get that online :)

Right, so below is a screenshot of my Webalizer stats, for my clients subdomain.
Running since beginning of October when my site went online :)
http://potn.nirajpopat.com/webalizer_eg.jpg
They are divided into Daily Average statistics, and Monthly totals.
Hits: represent requests made to the server. These will be request for images, audio, video, pages, any special cgi/perl, php scripts etc... These can amount very fast if you have alot of content on your pages that requires loading.
Files: is essentially the same as above, however these represent the amount of hits that successfully loaded, or the user allowed to load completely. (sometimes users navigate away from a page without the requests being fulfilled, these are not counted here)
Pages: are direct page impressions to things that end with htm, html etc...
Visits: are sessions that a user carries to your site. They last for 30 minutes of inactivity between page impressions. A user can request as many pages to your site within a session, and this will count as 1 visit. (as long as they timeout hasn't been exceeded)
Sites: are your unique visitors :)
KBytes: is the size of data transferred (1kb = 1024bytes)
And I think that about sums it up :D

yeah possible, I'm really thinking about it as the guy who done my sons nursery this year, wasn't upto much.

I've heard that school photography can be a good source of income too.
I might look into it at some stage. Though i'm not sure how I would be able to justify my charges and still maintain a good margin on wedding photography.
gheesom
7th of November 2007 (Wed), 05:24
I think its more a case of charge a bit less on the images, but know that you're gonna sell almost everyone.
Niraj
7th of November 2007 (Wed), 05:31
I do see your point, but what happens when a wedding client, wants to buy a similar sized image for themselves and find the price is double?
Or for example the service fees for doing school photo's are half what I would charge for a wedding?
Not quite sure how I could explain the difference in charges.
gheesom
7th of November 2007 (Wed), 05:38
My idea of it, I'm sure someone will tell me if I'm wrong.
You offer a package deal to the Nursery/School/College they get 1 x big print (12x8/10x8) what ever you decide and 4 small (9x6/6x4) for a set amount, say £20 - £30 ish
Then you give them online access to prints, and maybe a proof book to the nursery along with a price list (higher than the deal price) for them to buy the prints they want.
50 kids brings in £1000 at £20.
Niraj
7th of November 2007 (Wed), 05:40
Would you not charge a basic service fee, for the time you spend on-site during the sitting?
gheesom
7th of November 2007 (Wed), 05:42
Not if I was going into a Nursery/school its such a good income source I would provide the nursery with a % of sales as well.

I've thought about this recently.
Weddings are a totally different ball game and those involved know it. There is far more planning, running around, working hard to capture images throughout an entire DAY/EVENT than there is for sit and shoot portraits.
Figure portraits at $75 (or whatever you want(/hour sitting fee and those wedding prices for 8+ hours of coverage don't look so bad really, do they? In fact when you really look at it, the wedding packages are a better deal overall in some ways.
My prints, at this time, are the same price for portraits and weddings/events. BUT when I shot the school ball I did a special price for them. They feel like they're getting a good deal, your business is seen as supporting the local community and you are getting some pretty good exposure...and you're making a buck or two.
Everyone has to work it out for themselves and I for sure am evolving, but there isn't the disparity or problem that I originally thought there might be once I really sat down and looked at it.
Niraj
7th of November 2007 (Wed), 05:46
the idea sounds fantastic... i may have to sit down and right out a business plan to accomodate for this environment :) cheers for the info so far...
but while we're on the subject, it's all about placing yourself in the market competitively... every single school / nursery / college in my area have a regular photographer who they deal with... how does someone go about convincing them that you're a better alternative, without looking "cheap" ?
kja
7th of November 2007 (Wed), 05:47
Never compete on price, always compete on quality - your work, your manner, your professionalism, what you bring to the table.
Sell the sizzle, not the steak as Lloyd says.
Niraj
7th of November 2007 (Wed), 05:53
I like the sound of that Kristin... certainly from a buzzword point of view. "sell the sizzle" :D i like it alot...
With my pricing strategy, i'd be scared to enter the market for the fear that people would just refuse to offer any work because of the cost.
Some may not even look at the quality of the work, or consider me purely on that ground.
kja
7th of November 2007 (Wed), 05:57
You're exactly right. There are those who won't look at you once they see your prices. So what? If you are overpriced for your area, you will have to rethink. If you are simply overpriced for those particular people, you need to figure out how to reach other people.
If you aren't confident, why would anyone look at you? Go in with confidence even if you have to fake it a bit. You must demonstrate on first contact that you are the right person and more than capable of creating not only what the client thinks they want but also images beyond what they imagine. A great deal of it is attitude, it's amazing how you can even use that "pretend" confidence to your advantage - if you think you are capable, you can be capable. If you're doubting yourself or your worth, it will show to others AND in your photos, imho.
Confidence and positive vibes in and out...and there's always that "fake it til you make it" thing ;)
But I'm just a total newb and my advice is worth what you pay for it, perhaps...
Niraj
7th of November 2007 (Wed), 06:06
Kristin, i've only enterred the "paid photography" market as of April 2007... infact, only built myself a website in October, so that my paying clients had somewhere to view their images. So i'm a complete newbie to it too. Infact, I'm so new to it all, i've only JUST this week started speaking to an accountant and lawyer to iron out the legalities of starting up this business into something I can turn into a long term career / income.
I'll absorb any advice that motivates thought, and make my decisions from the information that I have :)

Gareth mate, i know how you feel. I've only posted a few pics on here, purely because the quality of the work on here is on a next level. I know my work is good, but i'm not sure how i could handle the criticism at the moment. I know it'll help me improve for the next time i post an image, but i just haven't had that gut feeling to do it yet. lol. I may one day get the guts to show you some shots from an Engagement and Weddings i've done. But not yet, lol.

Niraj, how are you celebrating?
Well, i'm working till 5, but i'm sure as soon as I get home, the family will want to do the rounds and visit more family. So will probably go and visit my gran and grandad, a few aunts and uncles, and take big boxes of home made sweets (indian variety) as a gift.
Then if it's the same as last year, we'll end up at one of my uncles house for dinner, and have a fireworks party in his garden :D

I like to search outwardly from the point where I last saw something, in a parttern of concentric cirlcles.

IMHO, I think the ellipses look a little unprofesisonal and sometimes repition is a good thing. But if you want to get ride of the repition I would make it "Twenty years down the road, you'll wish you went with the photographer you loved. In time, you'll appreciate quality more than quanitity."
I think the closing could be stronger - more of a return to the original story because that's the part that grabs me about it.
Also, did you post this in a thread once? I've thought of that thread often, I think I read it when I was originally reading back through about a year of posts on here. I didn't remember that it was yours until now. Great article.

Bryan, the blog is really wonderful. Your writing style is clear and easy to read. I love that last one on your grandmother's pictures and wedding photos in general. I, too, have two of my wedding in my family room, taken by a friend, all I could afford in 198...something. But on the platforms under those pictures are my in-laws' wedding photo that is about 60 years old. That photo is the only one they have. So, your thoughts touched me and I have often said to clients, "You only get married once, do it right that time." I know for me, it's important. Keep writing.
