View Full Version : Manfrotto/Bogen: What Pipes with "Pipe Clamps"?

I'm still working on getting my studio together ... I know some have followed this adventure in other threads over the past two years, sigh. Anyway, I have several sets of Autopoles that I intend to use several ways: backdrop kit, flash heads, etc. I notice that there are references to 'pipe clamps' and I can see that having a bar clamped to two autopoles six or eight feet apart could be very useful. But I don't see anywhere any specs or parts for the 'pipes' themselves. I realize that I can go buy some PVC or even galvanized pipe, but I wanted to know what the "real, professional" pipes were and which hardware others use or know of for attaching the pipes to the Autopoles or other stands. If I am not making myself clear it doesn't surprise me ... I am trying to do 20 things at once ... just tell me what I need to clarify. Thanks!

Hi Dwight,
The most common and useful accessory is a SuperClamp. They do just about everything and are very flexible. Bogen and several other manufacturers have a complete line of background and mounting hardware for SuperClamps.
Even if you wanted to use your own poles or pipe for the horizontal support you can still use SuperClamps with the hooks for the horizontal pole and they can clamp to Autopoles or moiunt on top of light stands.

I just bought a Bogen/Manfrotto SuperClamp and like TMR Design said, they'll attach to just about anything. There are also quite a few different types of attachments you can use with them to make they truely multi-purpose. Bogen also sells pipe clamps, quick action clamps and spring clamps.
The superclamp is made of a cast alloy. It's light but very sturdy and comes with a lifetime warranty.

Yes, I have a couple of clamps including SuperClamps, MagicArms, etc. that I use for remote shooting ... I just wanted to know about the 'pipes' ... does Bogen make a 'pipe' or is that part DIY? But as long as I have your attention, which SuperClamp would I use to clamp a pipe to an Autopole? I think I remember seeing some sort of Double SuperClamp.

If you're talking about the horizontal pipe they are available. If you look in B&H for Bogen or AutoPole you'll find a few different ones.
