This is a Fishook cactus in bloom. The cactus itself is about 1 3/4 inches in diameter. There were hundereds of these all over a desert canyon that I treked through earlier in the week. Look closely and you can see why they call it a fishook cactus.
This was taken with my brand new G2. I love this camera.

Pretty, but you might want to try a polarizing filter to cut down the glare off the petals.

Thank you so much for that advice Jim. This is a new camera and I got fairly involved with this little project. I did pick up the adaptor and a circular polorizer for the G2 so I will use it next time. Cactus flowers are sort of waxy and gaudy. I guess they want to scream out, "I am here!"
I just got a Velbon Maxi tripod today and will put it to good use too.
Now I need to experiment with it to see how I can use it for macro shots close to the ground.

Boy and his best friend:
A super shot.
Look, the only comment/question that I have is..
"..If there were hundreds of these guys in sight, would there have been a shot of the all of them .. the sort of desert equivalent of a field of flowers...?"
That is all. Your shot is super. But, I just think that we all ought to be featuring both the close-ups and
field of flowers.

BoyNhisDog:
At the risk of being unpopular, I don't like the shot. I don't like the colors, I don't like the washed out reflections on the leaves, I don't like the angle of the shot (which crops the upper flowers) and I don't like the cluttered background. There's just too much "stuff" in the background and the bright aggressive colors contribute to give me the feeling that I'm on a caffeine high.
This being said, at least the picture generated some major reaction rather than just "yeah whatever" and my opinion is irrelevant as long as you like what you've done.
Okay, I am being very harsh, and I apologize. Nothing personal, this is just one image I don't like.

The flower is beautiful and you composed the shot well. Unfortunately it looks like you oversatured it with color. Did you use photoshop or anything like that or am I totally off? If you did, I'd like you to post the original...
