I have recently began studying photography and have just purchased the Canon 10D. I am interested in purchasing a lense or lenses for this product but am a greenhorn.

I take pictures for events in and out doors, some portraits and aspire to shoot landscape images while traveling.

I would greatly appreciate any and all advice  .

It's really impossible to answer a question like this without some parameters.

What about price range, for example?

And what do you already have besides the 10D body? Are you enrolled in a course or courses where assignments may influence what you'd need?

See what lenses do what. Take a look at the Canon lineup, the Sigmas, the Tamrons, and see what people shoot with different lenses and what the qualilty is like.

The usual advice for beginers is to definitely get the 50/1.8 non-zoom lens. It's cheap but has excellent optics.
That would make an excellent portrait/low light lens (you WILL need a low light lens for indoor events)

Also ,if you want a zoom you should try to avoid the cheap kit zooms (35-70,28-80,28-90,etc) and get one of the better mid range zooms.Very few people are satisfied with the cheapies but most find the mid priced ones excellent. These are the 28-105(the f3.5-4.5 only!), 24-85, and 28-135 IS
The trouble is that you want to do landscapes and the zooms listed above are not wide at all when used on the 10D  .

You will have to get a wide zoom or wide prime(non zoom)
The canon wide zooms start with the 20-35mm and go up in price (and quality) from there

Have a look at the Canon EOS Beginners FAQ (http://photonotes.org/articles/beginner-faq/). It contains a chapter about lenses and gives you an idea of the categories of lenses that are available.
