Guess this is a multi part question(s) really. This year has been my first entry into sports photography and I am loving it. After speaking with the HS principal and AD, I was given permission to shoot some soccer late in the season which led to permission to shoot football as well. Needless to say, I was excited about having this opportunity and now I want to make the most of it. I am not a full time photog (nor intend to be unless some strange twist of events leads me there). That said, I wondered if it is acceptable that I only shoot some games since it's not feasible to be at all of them (particularly away games). I also wondered how to know when I should begin selling my work (I have used this year as a chance to do it gratis in exchange for the experience and learning opportunity). Anybody have thoughts on how to turn this thing up a notch?

One thought I had was to shoot games "by appointment". For things like little league and rec sports, the local photogs do the whole picture day thing which I have no interest in per se but no one does action work. I was thinking that I could arrange to shoot games upon request and work through the coaches and league (the league (baseball) is open to this). My thought would be to guarantee at least two shots of each player for any game I shoot and provide these to the coach on a cd(s) for a flat fee. The more parents on the team that want a copy, the cheaper/parent it becomes. This would give me a minimum amount /shoot so I wouldn't be left hoping someone goes to my site and buys. It would also be cheaper for the parents given that they get effectively unlimited copies of their son/daughter playing since it's on cd. They also get the rest of the team as a bonus. Does this sound like a good idea or insane?

namasste,
You got a good start there... I am in the process of talking to the HS staff also about doing sports events for them... I have started photographing the youth sports programs here in my area LL, peewee footbal, soccer,etc... I do the T&I stuff which brings me in $$ from that, I also go to games when they play and do action shots and then post all my photo web site.
then pass out a lot of bussiness cards to the site and let parents and kids look and buy from there...
So my T&I contact birngs in the $$ and the action shots brings in just a little more...
hope this helps,
Joe

Welp, there ya go...

Since Scott first posted this question in 2007, I think we all know by now that his original idea, and most others that he has had since then are all insane.

Ain't that the truth!

There's a reason the local togs are doing the T&I but no action, the money is in T&I, not action. You want little snot nose Johnny's mother standing in line with a check made out to Scott Evans, even though she has yet to see the picture. With action shots where you send them to a website, most will never look. Some may look and some may buy, but most will never get around to looking at the site. If you want to make money with youth sports photography, shoot T&I. I'm sure Mr. Janes will tell you the same thing.

BTW, thanks for returning my call the other day. I was trying to give you some work!

Chris, I am really sorry if I didn't. Devane will attest to this, I am having some weird stuff going on with my phone and have missed a bunch of calls lately. Wow, I actually feel bad, thanks Chris! :p

Joe, thanks for responding to my post. 25 months or not, it means a lot. I've gotten a little work here and there so I guess it all worked out in the end.

Chris and John, I'll give both of you knuckleheads a shout tomorrow.

Halfheartedly..go Browns?
