View Full Version : Krakow - People in the Old Town

Here are a few shots from a big bucket load that I took shooting on the market square in Krakow in Poland as part of an assignment I set for myself. I've never really shot this sort of thing before, I usually hang around in the motorsport section, so it was a little different for me.

I would be very interested in people's opinions.

Please be honest with any comments as I'm quite thick skinned and promise I won't take offence.

Many thanks.

Taken as a group I find them a powerful portrait of a place. They simultaneously show how similar we are in the West, yet how the cultural flavoring of Poland is enticingly different. I have never felt interested in going to Krakow... before. Now at least, I want to see more. You have an excellent eye for ideas, and the craft to communicate them well. That's art dude! ;)

Wow, thanks. Can I quote you on that? :D As I said these were only a small sample of the shots I took on the day, infact these were all taken within the first two hours of what turned into a 12 hour shoot! I'm now thinking I maybe should have posted stuff from the whole day, but no matter, your comments are very encouraging and I thank you for that.

I like that one too but I was a bit unsure if I'd turned up the contrast too much, but then I like lots of contrast so I'm not too worried.

I was surprised myself and a little disappointed that I couldn't get a shot of a drunk Brit mooning at a nun before vomiting on her. There were in fact many Brits but all reasonably sober and quite well behaved. I guess I'll have to try again in the summer for that particular shot.

An excellent series of the place you live in. You have a good eye and great compositional sense too. 4 and 5 are my favorites, thanks for sharing.

Excellent series, agree totally with above posters, city life is very similar in many places around the world regardless of political situations etc.

Very evocative urban portraits, but please dont judge the behaviour of all ' brits ' on the actions of the few.

It was a poster in Scandanavia who brought up the drunken Brits, their reputation has obviously spread far and wide. As I said, the ones I saw were all very well behaved and it was a scene quite far removed from my local high street on a weekend, but apologies for tarring all Brits with the same brush.

Anyway, many thanks for all the positive comments they are all very much appreciated. I should have everything else I shot online within the next week so I will put up a link when its ready for anyone who would like to see more.

I am from UK originally. I hate aggressive drunk stag parties on tour. I used to live in Tallinn, Estonia where they invaded in summer weekends. Hideous. I have friends from Krakow, Riga, Prague and Amsterdam that also grumble slightly at their presence. That is all I want to say on this matter, sorry to taint the thread. This is probably not the correct place to vent my angry opinions :)

Very nice candid street shots may I add. Photo number 5 has a nice sense of humour to it. The observing statue almost looks 'jealous' of affectionate human interaction.

Nice series!

#5, with the statue staring down at the couple has the potential to be an awesome shot!!
Take care

Very nice! I have family in Krakow and visit there often. Just went there this past summer. Beautiful there, so many great photo possibilities. I really want to buy a house there someday.

I actually took a photo in almost the same exact spot as you did in #2
