Hello everybody, I’m a weekend photographer in the process of buying a 10D and needed a little expert input on what lens/lenses to purchase. My main subjects are mostly landscapes and nature, but I may also want to take a few portraits. I’m also very taken by macro photos. My price range is around $1500. If at all possible I would like to buy one lens that covers most of the nature/landscape photography. As for the macro, I can purchase that later on if needed. So to sum it all up I’m looking for the very best, all-encompassing nature/landscape lens for under $1500.
Also where would be the most reliable place to buy the 10D and lenses at the best price? Thanks for your time; I hope to be out snapping away by the beginning of next week.

Welcome to the forum, Wizard. Try reading this thread: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=40054
There are so many choices....A great landscape/wide lens is the Canon 17-40. There really is not a lens that covers landscapes and "nature." Nature is a pretty wide term. That could mean flowers or mountain goats. ;)

like Jim says, the 17-40 is pretty good for that. You will generally use a smaller aperture for more DOF, so "fast" is not necessarely a factor to cinsidder in your case.
I have the 17-40 L (for less than a week) and I love it.

I bought the 24-85mm f3.5-f4.5 as my first lens for the 10D. It's not crazy expensive and is quite sharp. It'll let you do things from moderate telephoto to moderate wide angle with eveything in between. Later I'd recomend the 100 mm macro. It's faster (f2.8 ) and will give you a very nice subject to camera working distance. It also does 1:1 reproducion without needing an extension tube. This way you save a few bucks and you don't lose your infinity focus either.
As for buying the camera I would certainly suggest that you buy it in your country of origin. A camera is much more likely to break than a lens so you might have to send it back (I did) and sending it across borders wouldn't be my idea of a good time. In the US B&H are reputable and you'd get a good price.
Having said that, if you don't need the camera tomorrow why not wait and see what comes out of Photokina at the end of September. Almost certainly the 10D will be replaced with a camera that shares many 1D Mark II features (I think) and if nothing else the 10D's left on store shelves will instantly get cheaper.

I recommend the 17-40L for nature/landscape and the 50 f/1.4 for portraits. A flash (like the 420EX) with Pocket Bouncer (or similar) would also be a good idea. That's should all fit within your budget.

cmM - can you post the EXIF data from those two sample shots? I'm curious as to the settings/exposure, etc. you used.
thanks,
