I'm a photo hobbyist and just got a domain and web host.
I'm fairly experienced with using FTP and running a website, so that's not an issue.
The gallery will be the focus of the site, so what's a really good photo gallery script that I can run on my website?
Just did a quick Google search, and I see Plogger and JAlbum are a couple solutions available. I'm really interested to see what you guys use though!

I am a web developer and had some experience with setting up different galleries for different clients. I found JAlbum to be fairly limited and clunky, however for a complete novice would be suitable. I haven't used Plogger so I can't comment on that. You say you have some experience in setting up sites so maybe have a look at PHP Gallery. (http://gallery.menalto.com/) It is open source and widely used and supported. It has a complete administration system and configuration to your hearts content.
You may also want to look at Pbase (http://www.pbase.com/) or Smugmug (http://www.smugmug.com/) Although this means that your gallery is hosted elsewhere. There is also hotscripts (http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Image_Galleries/index.html).
In terms of flash galleries Simple Viewer (http://www.airtightinteractive.com/simpleviewer/) is free and easy to set up, its format is fixed, but works nicely.
SlideshowPro http://slideshowpro.net/ is great. customisable interface, admin module, great support site, and lots of photographers use it for their portfolios!
Good Luck.

I'm a big fan of Gallery (http://gallery.menalto.com/) myself.
I've been using it for several years to host my photos, and photos for friends. It's very easy to get themes for it (or customize your own, as I've done on my site). Adding images can be done in a multitude of ways, including from the web browser, a java uploader, or even directly from folders in windows XP.
If you run a high-traffic site, it even has page caching built in, giving you up to a 90% performance improvement.
you can take a look at mine here: http://images.charlesrichards.net
Also, if that's "too much" for you, I'd recommend simple viewer, as it's *very* easy to use, and looks great too!

I 'm not a web designer, but I know a little bit about HTML and design, so I did my gallery myself.
