17-55 on a crop body. 24-70 on full frame.

24-70 2.8 is L glass too. unless you're referring to the Sigma ver.

Depends on your camera. If 1.3 crop or full frame, the 17-55 doesn't work as it's for 1.6 crop designed.

The 17-55 has IS too, which is great for low light conditions, as you can reduce shutter speed.
There were several reports about failures of the 17-55, my 24-70L has never let me down in over 40.000 images.

I have a crop, and love my 17-55 IS. If I had a FF, I would want to check out the 24-105L IS before the 24-70L IF f/4 isn't an issue.

If the 24-70 2.8 L were IS this would never even be a question;)

Sigma isn't too bad you know... especially as it uses the Excellence range of glass.

24-105L IS.... that's my choice for sure... my next lens :)

For the sake of the OP i'd go with the 17-55...

That's pretty much the rule.

I've got the 17-55mm 2.8 and it's a great lens but, for wedding use I'm thinking of getting the 24-70mm 2.8. I find the shortfall between 55mm and 70mm of my 70-200mm frustrating, especially when you're restricted in how far you can move around.

I've also used the 24-105mm and wasn't overly impressed. Don't get me wrong, it's a solid lens and the range is useful but the long end seems a touch soft.

Just my opinion, for what it's worth.
