Sure... but why does it matter? For me it's usually 'cause I gave the camera to someone in auto mode and then forgot to change it back out.

From what I have experienced and from many others, using auto is the easiest way to over exposed/blown out photos

I've had my 5D for 1.5 years and I don't think the shutter has ever been tripped with the setting in the green box. Don't even know if it works 8)

I used auto when I first started photography. I used it with my Kodak (because it had no other modes), I used it with my Fuji as a crutch, and I used it occasionally with my XT. Can't say that I recall ever using it since though.

Don't even have it. I learned with no "modes" so for me Av is auto!

1D II has P mode. Same thing really except you can change a few things.

If you could shoot raw in Auto maybe it could be used (for simple grabs) but it doesn't (on my camera anyway).
It's nice that it chooses ISO for you though but it is limited to 100-400 on most cameras (the newer Canon bodies have better auto ISO modes that cover more range).

I used "Full Auto" for a day and then got peeved off with the flash popping up in low light which annoyed me when wearing a cap so I started using [P] mode and then took it from there.
I would explore EVERY setting in the camera before shooting (or try to)

thats probably true when shooting outdoors with very different contrasts etc. this is why shooting manual is the best choice, but for indoor "smash and grab" shots :D auto mode is fine. though personally for me i'd prefer to use M, aperture priority or, ocassionally shutter priority.

Absolutely not, it limits you to only having large fine jpgs on my 20D which is unacceptable and I don't have the option on the mkII. I won't even hand it to someone else in the auto mode, I'll set it to P or Av. I typically shoot in Av or M personally.

Never.

Never. Not even way back when I bought my first EOS Elan, in 1994. I do, however, use the P mode on occasion, and use Av a great deal of the time. Full manual and Tv, too.
The green box is just too constricting, IMO. You have no control over the most importants features of the camera including flash, exposure compensation, focus mode, etc.

If I had to hand over the camera for someone to take a picture, it in the P mode or 'Green Box' mode for sure.

Manual only, and Tv when shooting soccer to make sure I keep a shutter speed high enough to stop the action.

ive never used auto on any camera i have bought.. not because i might think im too good for it, but simply for the fact that auto gives no control of what your doing.

Couldn't find it on my 1D Mark II. ;)
This auto modus doesn't support RAW, so it's useless for me too. :(

I usually shoot in AV mode, then M, then TV. If weddings weren't so hectic I would like to shoot in M all of the time.

Nope. First day of shooting with my 40D I used the preset modes, i.e. portrait, landscape etc. Second day I used Av/Tv. Ever since I've used M.

I've just looked, and apparently my cameras do have the green box mode. Don't know what it's for though, surel AV means 'auto'?
