Generally speaking the smaller the final product (ie; 4x6 vs 13x19) the higher the DPI. This is really a matter of viewing distance, actually, but smaller prints tend to be held closer. A 4x6 is generally done at 300dpi but can go as low as 240dpi. Something as large as a 13x19 could go down to 180dpi or 160dpi.
Following that, your 800x600 would yield a very good 3" x 2" image. However, if the image is of very good quality, one could possibly upsize that to get an acceptable 5x7.

Are you referring to an inkjet printer or a photo processing machine?

cheers
its just so i know what size i can go up to with some of my prints when i print them digitally over the internet
i take your example of viewing distance - for example i just had a picture from my 3.2 megepixel camera printed at 12 inches by 18 inches!
it is now up on my wall and looks cool - but on very close inspection it is not so good!
just wondered if anyone had made up a list of suggested sizes?

Rule of thumb is 240-300 pixels per inch, but with appropriate post-processing you can go bigger.
