I do not have any long IS lenses, does using a TC affect IS?

Depends on the TC, depends on the lens.

Which do you have in mind?

Well I have been using a 75-300 non IS with a 1.4X tamron. I am looking at my options for upgrading and was wondering if the "IS" on the 70-300 IS works when used with a TC, I would not think it would bother it but ...?

I used the Kenko 1.5DG TC with my 70-300 IS the other day - I was pleased with the results.

I have a 70-200 IS a 300/4 IS and a 500/4 IS and my Canon 1.4 TC has no effect on IS on any of them.

I use to have the 70-300mm Is, and read someplace you couldn't use an extender on it. so I never tried it out...steve

I own one of these 70-300 IS lenses. The Canon 1.4 and 2.0 extenders are NOT compatable with this lens. Don't know about other mfgrs...tom

Thanks for the replies, I asked here because birders probably use them more. I guess I can just try and see!

Najo, if you haven't purchased yet, I would buy a better lens than the 70-300mm IS.. I had this lens for a year, and it was fine for awhile, then found out it was slow to focus for birds. Had to sell it and get an L lens. I didn't like the way the lens moves in and out for focusing. It took great pictures, if I wasn't trying to get a quick jumping bird. If you can, go for the 70-200mm and use the 1.4x. Or get the 300mm prime that I just bought, it's under $1,200 for that one, and it shoots sharp. It all depends what you plan to use it for. Birds, you need a long reach, and a quick focus. Just a few thoughts, other people may say something different....steve

Najo, I have the 70-300mm IS, and I use a Promaster 1.7X TC with it. It has no effect on IS, but you have to manualy focus using the Rebel XTi..
