Shooting football without AI/Servo has become too frustrating for me to handle.
When/if canon announces the 10D replacement i think i may have to just fit that into my budget.
I got really lucky this semester with state grants so i'm hardly paying a dime for college. Gotta spend that cash somewhere!

So have I also...I'm looking now for maybe getting a 10D or 1D. If not then, then I will wait for the new cameras to come out and go from there. Will not wait long though. :D

I fully understand what you say TQ……. but I can’t help but think back to the 20 odd years that I used a couple of Pentax MX cameras. I shot a lot of motorsport, airshows, rugby and anything else that took my fancy. This was with a fully manual camera, for those of you too young to know, that is no programme mode (or green box) no AV or TV just M. Set your shutter speed and spin the ring on the lens to set the aperture (at least the MX had a built in meter) then having set the shutter speed and aperture you had to focus manually, again for the young, that entailed spinning another ring on the lens until the split image in the viewfinder lined up, once you had all this together press the release and listen to the wonderful mechanical clunk of the shutter, then a quick flick of the thumb and advance the film.
I moved on from there to a Canon EOS 1N then a D60 and now an EOS 1D MkII but I really think that cutting my teeth in manual land and the darkroom has made me a better photographer in the brave new digital world.
Good luck trading up .

No, i fully understand what your saying and often tell myself to quit being such a wimp. But the best race car driver cant compete with a 20 year old car. The bar raises with technology, the better the equipment gets the better the photographs get.
And it's not like i'm not getting any shots, if htat were the case then i'd need to get some better tallent. But i'd much rather have 10 keepers then 2.
Another thing that annoys me is that i'm often forced to stop my lens down on bright days. I wanted to take a really narrow DOF shot with my 50mm 1.8 but couldnt quiet do what i wanted to because 1/4000 wasnt fast enough at ISO 100.
That and if the repalcement 10D does indeed have more then 7 focus spots then all the better, if it does indeed have a huge buffer with around 5fps then all the better. If it doesnt, then it'll just drive the 10d price down and i'll be happy with that.

That kind of sucks ...

I am also looking into replacing my DRebel because of the lack of the ability to use AI Servo in the creative modes. The cost of the MarkII, and the rumored release of a 10D replacement, is making me wait at least a few months or until there is a confirmation on a new 10D.

I have a Zeiss Ikon, not even an internal meter on that and its fun to play with occasionally, but I wouldn't use it for anything 'serious'. Even the wind on and shutter don't interlock so its very easy (as im used to a digital) to forget to wind on between shots, which is a waste as you only have 8 on a roll. It makes a nice change once in a while, as does my old 1000FN film body.
I have had a couple of EOS film bodies and moved on when I found I wanted to do things or make adjustments that the body wouldn't allow. So I would say, if the 300D feels restrictive, then you may need to move up.
If so think carefully about what it is that you want to be able to do, so that you get the right model. A 10D is a step up in terms of the number of things that you can adjust, but it still has the picture mode settings and does some 'helping'. A 1D is a bigger step and has no 'assistance' at all, all those 'beginner' type modes are gone, you can adjust everything, but this means you have to adjust everything and you have to know how and why. Only you know how confident you feel in your ability to do this succesfully, but I'm sure all the guys here will help you out as much as they can.

It does but only in sports mode which is at ISO 400, JPEG, and usually stops the lens down quiet a bit not to mention pretty slow shutter speeds.

I hear you guy's. I picked up my 70-200 L last Thurs and my I just picked up my new 10D 1/2 hour ago. They loaned me there demo for the weekend to play with it. Wow, what a difference. I couldn't wait for the new camera's as I do 90% of my shooting in the summer. Besides, I personally don't see the 10D dropping significantly in price. If a replacement is annouced, I see it fitting in between the current price of a 10D and the 1DMkII. Also, if the 10D drops any more, then the D-rebel has to drop a lot or no one will buy that. If they announce a replacement at the beggining of Sept, you still won't see one on the shelves for months. Just look at the 1DMkII. How many people are still on long waiting lists and it was announced in Feb. Everyone has to decide what they need and when. I needed mine now and got it.

That may be a good thing for me though vinny. It will give me a chance to save some more cash.

When you do save up the cash and finally upgrade, you are going to wonder how you ever took action pic's without AI Servo, exp comp and all the custom functions. I love the new features.

I think the 10D also taps out at 1/4000........if I'm not mistaken.
I hear you about the AI servo. I am waiting on the horizon for the 20D to be announced this Friday - then I'll have my card ready for a used 10D.

BTW, the Friday announcement is full speculation.

It does indeed, but rumors of the new camera are 1/8000, considering the d70 specs i cant imagine why this wouldnt be the case.

I hope so..........a 1/8000 TV and 1/500 sync speed and I will think of upgrading.
.................or else we will be the laughingstock of all D70 owners. :-(

I'm not so certain that it forces slow shutter speeds, but having to work in ISO 400 and JPEG if I don't want/need it is bad enough, but to add insult to injury, Canon disables the flash in 'Sports' mode on the 300D.
That pretty much makes it useless for indoor sports shots.

The only time it allows for f/2.8 it is at 1/500. The only time i've ever seen it go into the 1/1500 range is at f/9.
That means that it'll never let you shoot wide open on a bright sunny day, as such it's pretty useless.
Hopefully on friday nights (highschool football games) it'll want all the light it can get and shoot at f/2.8 but i'm not so sure if i'll have enough light to shoot at ISO 400. We'll see, this upcoming friday infact during the anual scrimage game we do.

6 months ive have my 300d now, im very close to outgrowing it. Sad, but for the price difference when I bought it and the chance I would not learn a thing or care about photography...its done its duty well.

I wish I could change out the viewfinder on the 300D. ne1 figure this out yet? I would love to have the split pentaprism so I could focus better at night.
again for the young, that entailed spinning another ring on the lens until the split image in the viewfinder lined up, once you had all this together press the release and listen to the wonderful mechanical clunk of the shutter, then a quick flick of the thumb and advance the film.

Yeah, we were so deprived! I don't know how we ever managed to get more than 1 or 2 decent shots a day! Then there were the guys who came before us who used rangefinder cams without motor drives! Think of Ansel Adams hiking with his 8X10 view cam & 4 sheets of film!
Still, If someone had offered me the equivalent of a 300D for $50,000 in 1975, I'd have given it some serious thought!

It is a focus mode that allows the camera/lens to constantly adjust the focus of the lens to the most obvious moving object in the frame, all the whlie letting you take pictures. In all other modes the lens has to actually "Lock on" to a subject.
It is hte focus mode used in sports mode on the 300D, if ya got it, give it a wing.

That's pretty much what I thought it was...Sunday we had an airshow near my house (Back yard seats!) They used to fly right over my house but they changed their flight pattern this year it seems (damn them!) I had to use the sports mode to get any shots at all (none were any good) In other modes I coulnd't hardly focus fast enough to see them. I think my telephoto lens must really suck it is sooo slow to focus.. One of these days I want one of those "L" lenses you all rave about....when my rich uncle gets out of the poor house maybe :D
Any of you with lots of money wanna adopt me?? LOL
