Jim Sapikowski was the UNC coach until his tragic death. These are from the opener of the annual memorial tournament.

not looking too sharp, is the AF system on the mk III that much better?

Not sure what you meant "not looking too sharp".... for this venue these are great shots.
Nicely done David....

I'm not a hockey photog by any means, but to me some of the photos look soft. That's what I meant, no offense to you David.

Mark, thanks.
Tim, I'm not sure where you're looking, but would be willing to be enlightened. I do know that #4 (the hit on the boards) isn't the crispest of images as it's pretty much a 100% crop. if you could be more specific....

David, I think I'm looking for more DOF, I see in #5 for example that the skater in the center was probably your focus point and the players on either side are fuzzy. But you probably had to use f/2.8 to get a fast enough shutter speed. I'm going to amateur games this season...I'll see what it's like to shoot hockey, I know it's not easy (or at least I've heard) I'm hoping for good lighting on the ice.
Once again, didn't mean to offend. I know my first comment was a tad abrupt and i apologize.

Tim,
no offence taken.
pro rinks, even minor league, are lit well enough to allow shooting at ISO800 or f4. The european shooters who post here on POTN also seem to get pretty good light. the lighting in amatuer rinks in the US is uniformly lousy. ISO1600 1/500 at f2.8 is the best-lit rink in my area. There's one rink I go to where I shoot ISO3200 at f2, 1/500.
good luck.

Great shots David. I enjoyed checking out the first series which gave a feel for the event. They all look real sharp to me except for the close up of the hit. 1, 2, and 5 are my favorites for the action shots.
