flower pictures have become very boring to me. but your first one still sparks some interest. The dramatic light, composition and the amount of flower that you left OUT of the picture greatly adds to this.

I couldn't agree more. Another shot that makes me want the 60mm macro - great work.

Flower pics aren't boring to me.
My honest opinions:
No.1 - superb, a prize winner. I'd be extremely happy if it was mine. In fact I'd be showing it off.
No.2 - colours great, detail good, but for me it's just much too busy. The flower(s) at the rear is/are fighting for attention, the foliage is popping in and out of the frame at different angles, and one piece of foliage at the bottom is blown out and screaming for attention. If you disagree, please tell me so.
The detail you have achieved in these two images really makes me wish I had bought the 60 mm instead of the 100 mm macro; you are getting much better DOF than I because of the shorter FL. Want to trade?

Thanks for the comments much appreciated. GlenNK interesting you say you would rather have bought a 60, often I have thought the reverse that maybe I would do better with a 100.

I've been having trouble with enough good DOF, and when I saw your images, it hit home - my FL is too long.
However that being said, it does help to eliminate the background. Impossible to have the cake and it it too.:D

Hey Dave. I'm envious. And no - I won't comment ala "most ridiculous" thread with a "wow that 60mm takes great photos". All kudos to you :-). I've recently got a 50mm macro but haven't made the time or had the patience to produce anything that's a patch on your left-hand pic. Guess you recognise the truth of earlier comments re the right hand one, but it's your own fault for providing the contrast ;-). Particularly love the left's rusty texture - brought out nicely by the lighting. So, what am I bothering to write for: only thought is that, given the richness of the colours atop the flower, it'd be nicer if the bottom half of the pic had less washed out colours. That soft pinks just not robust enough for my taste. Don't know how you feel about post-shutter abuse of Mother Nature's good self, but some subtle adjustments might just it that little bit more balanced top-to-bottom...? Cheers, Tony

Soften the lighting Dave if you can; buy the wife/GF some more flowers and try it again, The reason why I say is this: checkout my Flora Fauna gallery, I too have some pics taken with the 100mm Macro lens and then some taken further back with harsh lighting. The close up macros look better. Well done so far.
BTW - I think these are called oriental lillies or cobra lillies.

just an FYI - your site doesn't work under Firefox / Linux. Don't know if you care, but given you're presumably a professional (your web site looks like it would look good enough...) you might, and particular might want to check Firefox/Windows as lots of people use it. Regards, Tony

Thanks, yeah its been pointed out before. Its using some browser specific code and some javascript that is not compatible across all platforms/browsers. Am currently upgrading it from this to an e-commerce site and will do cross browser testing then.
BTW Dave, back on track. Have you seen the tips sticky in the Macro section? Has some info there.

Nice work.
Take your flowers outside and put them in some shade. Use your tripod and see what the diffused light is like. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Also, your gallery is called "Flora Fauna." I'm seeing only flora. No fauna at all. Maybe you should just call it "Flora."
