Yes, it's also a robber fly. A Eudioctria sackeni.

#1 is an interesting looking Robberfly Werner, #2 looks much more like the classical ones that I've seen! Good shots, although with #1 I feel you could have gotten down a bit lower and more to the right to get a frontal 3/4 shot if possible, and with #2 I suspect that there's a colour cast (but I like the warming effect anyways as is).

you got to be kidding us -they are soooo common! I can't imagine any reason they would not exist in wooded areas near you.

#2 shows the power of these flies.

Robberflies love dry areas like here. We have 102 different species here in the Okanagan and more to be recorded. :)

nice shots SW,, I've seen and shot ones like in #2 but not #1,,Cant help but to photograph anytime I see one.
