Hi guys,

I am new to digital photography world and this message board. My friends are all Canon fanatics and they talk me into canon. I never own a digital camera and planing to do so now, hence i need all you guys expertise.

I am currently looking at the G5 and S500. What are the differences between these? What do you think about these? For g5 do you think i should wait for the g6?

I really appreciate all the responses that i can get.

I suggest you take a look at http://www.dpreview.com/ and compare the 2 cameras.

As you have never owned a Digital camera it might be worth thinking about how you want to to use the camera and what sort of pics you want to take: eg the S500 selling point is it fits nice in a pocket and easy to carry around.

The G5 will allow you to expand and be more creative eg you can add lenses and external flash.

As to G6 and should you wait? If you are not in a rush perhaps - but you might want to consider the price of G5 as new models comes out.

 It has been my experience that you should never buy a new model release of anything. For the first 6 months or so you'll pay top dollar. After that the price starts to go down if you shop. I just saw the picture of the new G6 and it looks like my G3 with the buttons moved around. Of course 7mp is nice if you need it. Let's see what the specs are. As someone else said, if you want a camera now, there are some nice ones you can learn on like the G5.

So do you think it's a good time to buy a G5 now?
Seems like there are lots of online site with low prices. Do you think it's safe to buy via online or stick with retail?

Appreciate this

If you decide to go with the G5 over a G6, now would probably be a great time. My guess (based on my experience buying both my A40 and my G5) is that the G5 will get discontinued soon after, or maybe even just before, the G6 is released, and G5s will become scarce and expensive.

I bought my A40 about a month before the A60/70 came out, and the week I made my decision and went to buy, I could only find one on a retail shelf. Then later, I didn't decide on getting a G3/5 until the G5 had been out a month or two. I thought maybe I could find a G3 on clearance, but instead they were pretty much gone except for the odd web site, where they cost as much or more than a G5.

So don't hesitate too long if the G5 is your choice...

I bought my G3 about the time it was discontinued. They were really hard to find. If you want a G5 get it now. I found that surfing the internet of all the local stores like Circuit City, Best Buy etc. you should hit on a deal, give the store a call and if there are any in stock go down and pick it up. I got on Circuit City web site and discovered they had the G3 at a good price. I called them up and they said they had one left. I drove down there, only to find that the camera was being held for someone else. They checked their ware house and ordered me one. It came to my house 4 days later. He who hesitates is lost.
