This is kinda cool. You enter the camera, distance, aperture, and this Java applet displays a wire-frame model of various things (sparrow, human head, hot rod, etc.) and simulates the DoF based on the color of the wire frame. Black is in focus, fading out to light grey being out of focus.

Certainly seems accurate given my experiences with sparrows at 7 feet....
Kinda wish it had more objects, though. Like ducks.

Yeah, that is neat. I like how you can rotate it all as well.
Ducks . . . Widgeons, or Mallards would be nice. Harriers, maybe, or Tomcats.

Nice find, Scott. Pretty cool to mess with. Had to install Java to use it.

You did? What Windows version are you using? I thought the Java virtual machine came preinstalled on the later Windows version. :?

XP & SP-2

For some odd reason, it didn't run on VM - maybe my security settings are too high (just installed service pack 2). Wouldn't run on Firefox either until I installed Sun Java.

You're right. Just tried runing it on my XP machine under IE, Firefox and Netscape and they all wanted the Java download.

It does run fine under Firefox running in Mac OS X, though.

And speaking of SP-2, did that just come out? I thought they weren't going to release that until sometime in October. If it's available already I'll have to order me a CD from MS.

that's awesome !
Added to favorites !

I have the DOF formulas, but this is much more practical when I wanna know.

Leo - You've got a PM. Hopefully, it will work for you.

Scottes -

Great find. Martin Waugh, the physicist/programmer, deserves an award. His whole website also deserves a mention: http://www.liquidsculpture.com .

If like you to take tight shots of people, flora & fauna, or objects - and if you're still trying to become a great photographer - the DOF simulator deserves close study.

Scottes - I added a flying duck for you. And a few other objects.

More importantly (if possible), I added color, which gives one a much better sense of how the focus changes with distance. And I added a "Maintain Magnification" switch that makes the simulator automatically adjust the lens length when you change the distance, to keep the subject the same size. This lets you easily see the effect of choosing a different lens/distance combination.

Enjoy!

How does the crop factor affect the result, if any.

ROFL!! That is awesome! Thanks a huge amount - that really does help me.

And the color does help quite a bit too.

Kudos, and thank you sir.

applets like applets, but did you guys see his gallery on the website  ? My God, he has picked a subject to photograph and took the art of it beyond perfection.

You're right maderito, he deserves a pulitzer or something. I was stuck in that gallery for quite a while.

High-speed photograph of one drop colliding with the splash from another drop

...and I thought playing darts required accuracy.

Martin, a great applet! Congratulations :)

Now add blur to OOF areas and phong shading :)
