View Full Version : my pictures suck

Do you ever get frustrated when you see your pictures are not exactly up to your standards?

Lately, I've posted a couple pictures, and judging by the views/replies ratio, they suck.

It doesn't mean I'm gonna change anything, just pissed and needed to share.

Anyone else going through this ?

my pictures suck

As someone once answered in court, "Maybe yes... and maybe no"!

You can't go by "judging by the views/replies ratio" in the "Share" section cause you're not asking for a reply there! In "Critique" you're asking, but don't be surprised if you only get a few there, too. Usually, if someone has already said what I'm thinking, I'll just go on to the next one. (Which is why I didn't say anything about the bike pans).

People have lives & things to do. If I get 2-3 comments out of 50 views, I'm happy!

I know. I'm not complaining about not getting replies. I'm only comparing.

If a pic sucks, I don't usually bust the person on it, unless you put "free to flame - won't be offended" notice. :?

You know I look at alot of the photos that I take, and you know I sometimes think the same thing.

But I also know that I have only ever taken photos for 18 months or so.

and I still have alot to learn, I learn with each photo that I take, and I even learn from the ones that suck.

you know you might take 100 photos a day and yet there may be only 1 or 2 that are any good. You might take that many and none are any good.

but all photos teach you something. . .

but all photos teach you something. . .

I think it's more accurate to say that "all photos have the ability to teach you something, it all depends on if you are willing to learn". But thats not what this threads about.. but here's another quote

An amateur takes a thousand photos and shows you all of them, the pro takes a tousand and shows you one.

We all have moments when we suck and moments when we are brilliant, it's looking at the difference between the two and working out what changed.

Hope my tupence helped.

BearSummer has a great point, about amatuers vs pros showing. If your photos aren't getting as many view/comments as you'd like, then be pickier. I'd guess, just a WAG, that if anyone posted half as many photos then they'd get as many or more views as a total.

Do you want to hear "half the photos that X posts suck" or "every photo X posts is at least pretty good." ???

If half your posts suck you'll get less and less and less views, let alone comments. If every post is good, over time you'll get more views, as people will begin to recognize your name with quality, and will begin to view anything you post. Some of our best photogs here post infrequently. And they get lots of views and comments. I think it's because we (or many of us) know that Y or Z's photos will be good and interesting.

Pick and choose, and post what you think is your top 1% or 2%. Or post 3 or 4 photos in one post, stating that in the subject. Maybe at least you'll then gets comments about every one, though maybe not everyone will comment on each. (Maybe?) And if you post 4 and 1 gets ignored or almost, you'll begin to get an idea of what people like or not.

And as an afterthought, if everyone here posted half as manay photos, then we'd all get twice as many views - at least. There's a lot being posted here, and it's tough to look at them all. I'm lucky if I get time to view 5% of the photos that get posted.

What you guys say is true, no doubt about that.

It just seems that I haven't gotten good results lately (and I might have gotten better ones before), but that might be because, every once in a while I have the tendency to raise my standard instinctlively, and maybe I did so at a not very glorious time (from a photography point of view).

I know I have progressed since a few years ago when I started taking pictures, because as I look back through the pictures on my website (they're in reverse-chronological order in the main galleries by the way) I notice a gradual decrease in quality, or maybe it's just the fact that they're old and I've seen them so many times.

I just need to go out and shoot!, I think that will solve my frustration.

I find that you will only improve if you're ruthless. By that I mean: DELETE all the poor pictures and empty the recycle bin afterwards. Even if it is the only picture you have of Jr hugging Mickey Mouse on your very first trip to Disney Land. If the quality of the picture sucks, then trash it. Believe me, the next time a once in a lifetime moment comes up, you will automatically take better care in exposure, composition and lighting. You would have trained yourself to take better photos. If its worth taking, then its worth taking well.

Hope it helps

yea... ruthless I shall be !!! I'm loggin in to my FTP account and shreading the crap out of my website  No, j/k

I'll get over it. quickly. Thanks for the support though. Actually, someone ordered prints from my website last night, so that kinda bumped my ego a little bit. It turned out to be a very good friend of mine from Indiana, and she did it mostly to support me, but still... feels good !

Damn, dude! I just checked your website now and you have absolutely nothing too worry about! Here I was thinking that you were like really hopeless.

I really liked your galleries.

IMO, your pictures are really good.

FWIW, I thought the navigation through your galleries could stand a preview of some kind.

When your pictures look like mine, then you can complain.

Have you ever tried to e-mail a quilt?

I'd not take much notice of how many replies you get, i've had a look at your work and i like what I've seen so far. A cat can get 10 replies here and something far beyond said cat can get little response, you can't really judge nor should you judge your work on it

It's a good thing that you're questioning yourself though. But i'd not say the answer is here

Keep at it, Everyone has this 'woe' whatever field they are in.

Being critical can only drive you to get better photos. It's a good thing, CMM.

I think it still comes down to what are you doing photography for? you want acceptance and approval? Or you like to be self indulged with your own pride and accomplishment?

If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got.

Or something like that...

Dude ... keep that attitude. Don't ever think your pixs are the greatest. The moment you think no improvements are necessary ... is the day to hang it up. Photography is like all things creative ... there is always room for improvement. There is always something new to photograph or some to photograph in a new way. The moment you stop growing ... you're dead ... you may still be breathing but you're dead man.

ps- my snaps suck too.

Nothing drives me more nuts then spending a afternoon shooting my camera and all the images suck. I know exactly how you feel.

Absolutly know how your feeling, its been a while since I shot anything really good.

Maybe you just need to take a step back, take a deep breath, and take another look at how you are taking and then processnig your photos.
I know I do, I think Iv tried to go beyond what myself and my gear is capable of, and I know Iv tried to take photos that I knew at the time wouldn't work because I didn't have a tripod, or the right light, and then been disapointed when they didn't work.

Trust me, you're photos don't suck, and you get way more replies than I do.

I think (Or at least I hope that I'm not the only one.) that we all have bad days or slumps, where some, or in my case at times, a lot of what we take is crap. I've gone to football games where I've come home, done a first review of the game and struggled to find enough pics make a gallery for the guy I'm shooting for.

I think you found a very good answer for yourself when you said you need to just go out and shoot. Sometimes that's just what it takes, I know at times that's what it's taken for me. You go out there and shoot something for fun, that just appeals to you on a whim, and you sort of find a little more of the joy in photography that was blocked by your momentary frustration.

A couple of months ago 7 of us loaded into my fathers Van for a GKPE. We headed off on a 13 hour drive around the upper central North Island (the Waikato region).
All of us took an easy 100 shots each, at least, and all we got out of it was an appreciation of FlyingPetes Wifes Cooking (its GOOD!), a Play with a 5D, and each others company.

This thread was started 2 years ago, when Cristian had only been a member for 4 months, so looking at his work now really doesn't reflect his abilities then. I'm hoping he'll stop back by and offer some followup on his journey. I checked his site and some of his recent posts and I'm certainly impressed.

Huh, you know I never even thought to look at the post dates.

I wonder what he feels about it now, someone will have to send him a PM if they seem him post anywhere more recent :)

It's one of two things. A, just because it wasnt commented doesnt make it a bad photo, or 2, they do suck, and if thats the case, tough titties, just keep trying.
