I've never believed that it takes all types - but unfortunately we get them in spite of not needing or wanting them.
Seems that quite a few of the M35 members weren't really paying attention to some obvious clues; several aliases is the biggest clue - people that are honest don't keep ducking under different names - their name is their passport so to speak.
Clark obviously wasn't inept at what he does best - "acquire" money - other peoples' money.

I thought this was classic!
Clark made them wait in the hallway, according to several people who were there. From inside the apartment—the one he shared with Lisa Gilsdorf, the agency's director of operations—Clark handed the photographers their prints through a crack in the door.
