View Full Version : Such a noob mistake...

This is really frustrating...

I've made this mistake when I was going to niagara. I thought 256 mb wasn't enough, so I took some pics that I thought were "not good enough for prints" at the lowest resolution.

Guess what prints were the best? The ones at the lowest resolution. I want to print them, but it's 640*480...

A few days ago: Same thing. I was shooting at ISO 800, at night in a car. It's not gonna turn out good, right? I should save some space to make "better" pictures later... I get home and I discover a PERFECT portrait. :x

But it's 1000*1500 pixels. :x I will NEVER EVER EVER switch to low resolution again. EVER!!!

And I hope you won't too

No...
I travel with 2 CF of 1 Go... and the CD writer Apacer... And the 2 Go CF are cheaper and cheaper and I start looking at them... On the other hand, I am starting to dream of a small hard disk of 40 Go with a good screen to view the results when travelling... (and cheap of course...)

But size of the files is bigger and bigger. I was able to put around 400 pictures in the best Jpeg with my Eos 10D, and not around 170 with my Mark II on a 1 go card...

When I was in Belize, my 6 CD were quickly full during my last holidays... But everywhere, you can find CDs... and I bought 6 of them at 50 c each and my problem was solved.

I have seen a new microdrive of 2, 2 go, anybody has tried it ?

The Magicstor 2.2 GB Microdrive? I've never used it myself, but I've read posts of a lot of people who have problems with it. It's a piece of crap. Avoid it!! (Use the search function to search for "magicstor" and I'm sure you'll find the posts of people having problems with it.....).

I now have a couple 1-gig CF cards and the 4-gig Hitachi Microdrive, but I really think I'm going to continue using the CF cards unless and until the time I think there's a chance my day's shooting will exceed the capacity of one of them.

As I've turned around on my hubby (a nerd from long ago).....

memory is cheap!

But I have done the same thing, not because I'm saving space but because I was shooting something for eBay (product practice!) and forgot to change the settings.

I do that when I forget to change from M to Av too, which is a PITA. I usually figure that one out when I try to change the aperture and notice the shutter speed number moving.

Doc,

If you have a Circuit City in you area, go buy there. I just went to my "soon to be closed" CC and found 4 gb Extreme 3, the fast ones for 20 bucks. That is dirt cheap. Get 2 of those and you'll be good for a week or so without lowering your resolution.

Good Luck,

Ron

I am sure Doc has found some new cards in the last 54 months that he posted this! ;)

Oh I feel for you and know others who have been in the same boat. I beleive there are some upsizing PP tools you could use to help.

I never move off RAW since I know I'd forget to change settings. Bought more cards but still sometimes find myself not shooting as much as I should for fear of not having enough memory. That means time for more cards for me!

256MB? Really? Sorry to pile on the OP but about the smallest card you can find now is 1GB and 2GB and 4GB cards can be found for the price of dinner. Under $15 for 4GB.

I can't believe someone dug this thread up.

I find it unnerving and amusing that people don't notice the date prior to responding.

And now it has compelled me to respond. *head hangs in shame*

I didn't notice the date but I did notice the posts by the OP, over 9,000 and was a little surpised that someone with such a high post count was using a 256MB card. Makes sense now though.

I've taken images at low res (for my camera at the time, that was 640x480 - but cut me some slack, it was a 2mp), because the 64MB card I had (cost me like $92 or something too) was all I had for a week long trip.

I wished a lot of those pictures were higher res, but there's not a lot you can do about it.

Here's one of the FULL images:

http://i44.tinypic.com/jgjpes.jpg

These days, I shoot nothing but the highest resolution (although I still don't use RAW). Even when I shoot an expodisc shot for white balance, I find higher res shots I can use to check for dust, or hot pixels later in time to see if and when I ever had a problem.
