Once again resizing has softened the image somewhat, but the full sized version is sharp.

Really like the framing and the crop. Nice.

EDIT: the image is great too ;)

Nice glow, but I think for silhouttes to work they need to be of buildings or other clear shapes in the fore or middle ground rather then just trees or distant features.

I agree with David, and I think there's not enough colour and too much black.

Re sharpness, did you sharpen after resizing?

I think this image is great. Well done.

Thanks everyone for your comments.
David and George...each to their own I suppose, and yes of course I sharpened after resizing but couldn't get it to a point where I was happy with it because of how the trees looked. I'm MORE than happy with the full size (printable) image. As for not enough colour...it's an image taken 40 minutes after the sun disappeared...how much colour do you want? I certainly wasn't willing to add fake colour. Also, if thier were clear shapes in the foreground then it wouldn't be a real sillhouette.

Thanks again for all the comments guys.

Exactly! If you taken it earlier, or better still if there were clouds in the sky to reflect the light, there'd be more colour and the sky would be more interesting. That was my point.

If there was a pink spotted flying saucer in the shot it would be better too right ;)

Edit: meant in jest ;) hopefully taken as such

Al - you've missed the point. You say "if" as if there's nothing you can do about it.

The whole point of this forum to offer critique which will hopefully help the photographer take better pictures. So in this case, to wait or look for a more interesting scene.

Unfortunately in this case the OP has chosen to dismiss the comments that aren't complimentary.

I like the color of the sky in addition to the silhouette of the trees and hill.

Ummm, dismiss the uncomplimentary comments? I believe they were the ONLY ones I addressed here, but you seem to be having trouble grasping so I'll go through it again.

1. I still maintain that a sillhouette isn't a sillhouette if there is detail in the foreground. In this case I was going for the last bit of light and colour in the sky rather than a strong sillhouette.
2. Sharpness. The original large image is lovely and sharp and I am more than happy with it. I am NOT happy with the softness of the resized image you see here, (which I believe I address in the opening post). Yes I tried sharpening after the resize, but I couldn't get a result I was happy with (halos on the trees etc.) so I decided it was best left alone. If anyone wants to show me how it's done, have at it!
3. Colour. As you see it in the picture is as it was on the evening. It is what it is...nothing added. I wasn't trawling the streets looking for the perfect shot, I was driving home from work and caught the colours in the cars rearview mirror. I stopped, took some pictures (camera is ALWAYS in the car with me, just in case) then carried on home.

All that said, Curiousgeorge, I love your work and I respect your opinion, I just resent the claim that I dismissed the critisisms when clearly I didn't.

Oh...and I happen to think I did a pretty good job cloning out that pink spotted flying saucer.

I really like the colors. They tell the story of how the evening was rather than something that wasn't. Nice shot.

I'm not sure what 1 and 2 have to do with what I said, but with regard to 3, all I'm saying that the image could have been better with a more interesting sky. I'm not saying you could have done any more with what you had, as you said that's how it was on that evening. And I don't expect you to alter it afterwards. Just saying that different circumstances could have yielded a better image, so next time perhaps try the same shot with a more cloudy sky. I thought that would be constructive criticism.

In my opinion, people rarely post negative comments on this forum. People that view but don't comment are most likely those that prefer to say nothing than something negative. So when they do post I think they're more valuable and should be acknowledged.

Sorry if you didn't dismiss those comments, but to say "to each their own" seems like a polite way of saying "whatever"!

My sentiments entirely. The fact is the picture is a very poor one. There are a number of reasons for this which I'm happy to attempt to explain. However, if that is not what you want to hear, then I won't take up any more of your time with my comments.

Actually each to his own is a perfectly fair way of describing individual's subjective interpretation of the art that is our photography....

Wrong!!!! In YOUR opinion it is poor, there is no right and wrong here..

No please, explain.

I know you two have made up but for our benefit, yes, please explain ;)
