Thanks for the tip off Biko!
Still light on the tech specs though, my main question, is it 3x or 4x zoom?

WHY SILVER ?!

... because REAL Canon G series cameras are silver
4x zoom, like the G3 and G5.

I know you're kidding, but actually there's probably something to that. When the G5 came out, they probably wanted to distinguish it as the top of their prosumer line, so went with black. Now that the Pro1 fills that spot (and is the approriate blackness), the G series needs to be "taken down a notch", so its back to silver. With a black G6, the less informed out there in the market might look at the G6 and Pro1 and think "the look the same, and one's $300 cheaper - I'll buy the cheaper one". With different colors, they might eek out a few more Pro1 sales from those who don't know better and think the black just looks cooler. Marketing...

You know thats a very good point.
I know when I was in the market to replace my mavica I was looking at the G2 and was gonna get the camedia 8080 instead (or something like that) cuz it was black and looked more like a camera than some silverish colour that the G2 came with.
But then in the end I ended up with a G2 cuz well.... it came in black :)
Now if only they made the 300D in black I'd be over that one.... .i mean the battery grip doesnt even match *gack*

The black model has been avaialbe here in NZ via independant importers, ususally for an extra $200 though. That is a lot to pay for a colour!
Still can't find anything out that makes me want to rush out and buy one a G6, as predicited Canon have taken the source site down, so it was another slip. I downloaded most of the hi-res images, the ones above are 33% the size of the originals.
Anyone want to host the full size images?

Quick glance at this list - what is new about this camera in comparison to all the other 4, 5 and 8 MP ones out there? Is the sensor any better?

Nothing I see in these specs compels me to upgrade. Looks just like a new body and more pixels. Hasn't even got the 640x480 movie mode!
Might be possibly worth it if it was a lot faster focusing etc, or a bigger zoom.
The physical sensor size is still probaby the same as the G3/G5, so it could mean more noise, too early to tell.
Another little birdie was talking to me about a EOS20D...

I saw a site some time back that had directions for spray painting your 300D black. For the really style-concious, buget-strapped photographer... :D

lack of the 640x480 movie mode is pretty odd! even the S1 IS has it. but to be sure, why fix what aint broken, they cant upgrade the G series much, because it's not their top of the line series anyway, they have the DSLRs for the really nifty stuff. anyone who's gonna buy the prosumer digi cams will probably not need more than what they are offering with the G series.

It looks to me like a G3/G5 with a new sensor (same lens, same features, etc.). Maybe it has the new Digic II processor. If Canon can work out the CA problems that have been hurting the high-megapixel P&S cameras lately, they might have a winner. I've always liked the portability factor of the G-Series cameras.

What happened to RAW?? Is this just a mistake? Would be a real shame to get rid of RAW for a G series cam.

Don't worry, RAW is there in all its glory.

I was thinking that one of the things they may have imroved upon is being able to use the focus assist from the Canon series Flash units which would be a big step up from the focus assist on the camera.
