View Full Version : VH1 Reality Series "The Shot"

Anyone else happen to catch this series?
Typical competitive scenario:
- 10 wannabe fashion shooters divided into two "teams" of five.
- Each week, a different set up they have to shoot for an "agency."
- One team wins each week and is safe..The other team loses and one member of the losing team gets booted.
At the end, the overall winner gets $100,000, a spread in MarieClaire and gets to shoot an entire campaign for Victoria's Secret.
The "brutally honest host" is a working fashion shooter (who's name escapes me...), another judge is the fashion editor for MarieClaire and the third is a (I guess) well known H/MUA.
Next episode has them in-studio working with kids and animals so it should be good comedy.

I liked it ok. Better than sitting around doing nothing. Some Canon eye candy. Yes, it's all Canon (thus far).

I caught, it was somewhat interesting but I want to hear more detail talk, F-stop, ISO, reason for lighting setup, reflectors etc etc...
What I found funny is how Marissa got sick but on ANTM they teach them they have to deal with those type of things to appease the client and photog.

i dont think we are gonna get that because most people have no idea what those terms are. If they make the show with alot of technical stuff, the common person wont watch it.

It looked strange. The photographers looked very much as though their wardrobes had been chosen for them to be as wild as possible. I'm surprised there was no guy in fishnets and a dress, Now that'd guarantee his entry to at least the 3rd round regardless of photo quality!

I don't watch a lot of these shows because they usually come on when I am busy editing pictures. Plus the few times I watched ANTM my thoughts were along the lines of; beautiful models and scenery, but how often do I get that. I usually get the new model with few skills in a place that only has a few really photogenic spots. And then it is usually only the model and I and occasionally an escort and MUA. On rare occasions I have an assistant, who doesn't know very much about photography.
On the rare occasions I have had trained models, with MUA/stylist and something approaching an actual crew, it was a whole lot easier to get good pictures. What they should do on "the Shot" is to give each photographer one brand new aspiring model and tell them to take great shots in and around an ordinary middle class home with no other help. Now that is a challenge.

I think "the shot" is interesting. I suspect that it goes way over the top of most people's heads though.
What I like is that it gives me ideas for different interpretations.

More reality TV... A lot of these shows start out with potential, until the whining, back-biting and arrogance appears. Unfortunately, with the writers strike, this what we have to look forward to. Why is it, as time passes, we have more and more TV channels and less and less good programming?

I've also never seen those inicials before (1st is AMERICA'S Next Top Model not PORTUGAL'S Next Top Model and 2nd we don't get US tv channels here or at least not the same ones you do) and when i find something that i don't understand i google it to try and find a answer by myself... but it seems i'm the ignorant one for doing that and trying 2 help.
In relation about the Really stressed you to type four words eh? well... i guess it stressed me just about the same as it would strees you to type WWW.GOOGLE.COM (http://WWW.GOOGLE.COM) and search it by you're self.

People like to see other people having problems. It's a psychological thing. Subconsciously, they like to see that other people are having a harder time than they are.
Goes along with watching NASCAR. No one (sane) enjoys it simply to watch them take left turns all day. At least I couldn't understand enjoying that.

I really like the show, but I agree with Ultra. I herd one term, and that was shutter. Thats about it. I also hate how he refers to it as "film" on the shoots they go to do, and it is clearly digital (I read Digital) on the strap of the camera in the Rock Climbing episode.
I did like the episode where they got to use the 90 cameras to take a 180 degree pictures, that was pretty nifty.

The VH-1 video links are broken, so I still have not seen the show.
Russell James (host):

Dean Zulich seems to have the most imagination and greatest competence:

Robin Perine:

Has potential and some sense of posing, but depends on subjects with shock-value. Lighting is out of control with almost all shots washed out.
Airic Lewis:
http://airiclewisphotography.com/
A flair for posing and not afraid to take risks with portraits, but lighting is out of control.
John, the wedding photographer, a bit too generic clues for my search skills. Sorry.
Maria Carmel:

Also good potential, sophisticated look, needs to stretch a bit.
Ivan Paric has imagination. Needs more portfolio and had bad lighting on the fireman.

Those yahoos do not understand the "TEAM" concept at all. That's what kills me. That would be something I'd establish upfront above all else.
T = Together
E = Everyone
A = Achieves
M = More
There's no "I" in team. And they're all acting like a bunch of individuals. I know it's a competition, but they still have to pull together to make sh!t happen. Oh well. It wouldn't be a show without personality conflicts and drama. Give me a goddam shot at "The Shot".

It's almost unfair though because in the real world (no MTv pun intended) you wouldn't have a "team" of photographers working like this.
Sure, you have a "creative team" (photog, LD, Grips, HMUA, Agency Rep, etc...) but the shoot ultimately comes down to one photog and one camera.
You don't make movies with multiple directors on the same set (Cohen Bros being the exception...)

That might be true, but still they have to establish some sort of cohesion regardless of how things are done in the real world. This show is based on a team concept much like survivor. Sure, ultimately there's only going be one sole survivor at the end, but in order to get to that place it's better to establish a strong team first.
What I find most amusing is that almost nothing these photographers produce impresses these judges. Especially the bald gay guy whose speciality happens to be hair.

My vote is for John. I understand that if they get too much into specifics they can go over the heads of anyone watching from a non-photographic standpoint. I think I heard Dean and Ivan talking apertures in EP 1 or 2. The show makes it seem too much like the cameras are already set for them, but for each of these photographers, they know how to handle a camera - would I go on a show like this and expect to be creative but not be allowed to change around my settings? For exposure only? Maybe, but I'd feel really cheated.
VH1 has tons of highlights and other video snips after each episode. Throw in some technicals for us geeks.

I noticed in the volleyball shots they were using different lenses. A few had the 85L while one had a 50L, one had a 135L or 200L, and another was using what I though was the 24-105L. Only one was using my weapon of choice for volleyball - the quick focusing 85 f/1.8. It didn't seem to make much difference in the outcome - at least it wasn't mentioned.

Just started watching it, not a big fan so far, the contestants are just so annoying, as is the hosts ego,
also why do they keep saying 'film' you can clearly see what cameras they are and with the digital on the neck strap  unless its to try and make themselves sound better to the general populous, "I shoot film I must be a pro"
I'll still watch it though

yea that guy with the bleached hair needs to wake up and think of himself...it's nice to show off how good you are at helping everyone...but he is gonna get sent home based on his shots if he doesn't concentrate on himself...the team thing is really just to organize the show, he needs to remember that he is still directly competing with his team mates...seems to me like he isn't very interested in winning...but is more interested in critiquing everything....

Robin needs to go. Watched this weeks' episode two days ago. Interesting Shoots. Can't believe most of them screwed up sensual on the food fight challenge. Also, the main shoot. What part of one close-up and one full body shot do you not understand?
And the setup. This is fashion, they don't want standard boring Senior Portrait lighting.
Alexajlex
5th of December 2007 (Wed), 15:22
I saw a bit of this and I also felt there was a lack of technical info.
On the volleyball shot the 85L is not the best choice (the 85 1.8 as mentioned is a better fit). The weight alone of the 85L at 2.25 lbs will wear you out after 30 minutes (it also makes the camera front heavy forcing your arm muscles to constantly fight gravity).
milleker

Any comments on episode six? Spoilers ahead.
Glad to see Robin go - though we see more of John's true nature, well, at least after editing. Can't fault Jason too much for not relaying the client's information to John because after all, John should have been the one pitching the idea if at all. John needs to step up and be team leader.
Seriously though, skin. How hard is that? The only one I liked was the pregnant belly and the heart, but I see that pose everywhere. Cliche' pregnancy shot.
And, was it me or did the dancer shots (that were hung in the gallery) look muddy and underexposed? I mean, were they not allowed to mess with the lighting at all? Not a good advertisement for that large format HP printer.

Am I the only person who finds all the "photographers" lacking in creativity and all of the models to be amature at best?
At least if the photog's knew what they were doing they might be able to get the models to relax. I dunno, I found the show overall just unrealistic and kinda boring.

Hahaha .. no .. I dont bet .. but all the *commentators* are so biased .. and the refs
have no clue .. My Raiders lost a game to The Colts last week on a last min holding call
that my girlfriend, who does'nt even know football, saw clear as a bell .. and asked me
why the ref who was standing right there, did'nt call it .. I said it's simple ..
Ever since 911, the NFL wants all the *good ole* teams to meet in the playoffs ..
they want the red, white, and blue of The Fakeriots .. (damn cheaters)
They want the good ole wholesome Manning types .. they want big money to control
what is shown, and not honesty .. afterall, that would be too good .. I swear ..
The NFL is turning into The WWF .. it's a downright shame ..
I went two years without television .. it was great .. I actually got alot done ..
I sometimes wonder why I even bother right now .. but, with The NFL season winding down,
and The PGA about to start up again .. It's about all I could care for ..
The History channel, the SciFi channel .. are sometimes not bad at all .. but the rest?
Throw um in the can .. it's a bunch a BS .. Everything is *fixed* .. and the outcome
of every reality show has already been determined .. I'm convinced ..

I've been in Sports TV for over 20 years but I do have some exposure to the entertainment side so "Entourage" cracks me up.

Nova (PBSHD), NGCHD, Discovery HD, Showcase, Hockey Night In Canada (HD).
There is some programming that is so amazing to see in HD that you simply cannot write it off as a medium unto itself. Spike TV is garbage. TBS? It's the damn Spiderman channel.
True that you need MORE channels in the premium ranges to enjoy it, but if you just get a basic cable setup you only get trailer park crap.
There is GREAT TV programming out there, just watch it. It's on right now.

Just watched the first two episodes yesterday. I wonder how many of them are also members of this forum, it would be interesting to hear what they say about discussions on this board regarding the show.
The VH-1 video links are broken, so I still have not seen the show.
Russell James (host):
http://russelljames.com Competent but uninspired.
Dean Zulich seems to have the most imagination and greatest competence:

Jason Clevering:

... and no photos except one splash. But he looks like an artist ...
Robin Perine:

Has potential and some sense of posing, but depends on subjects with shock-value. Lighting is out of control with almost all shots washed out.
Airic Lewis:

A flair for posing and not afraid to take risks with portraits, but lighting is out of control.
John, the wedding photographer, a bit too generic clues for my search skills. Sorry.

Also good potential, sophisticated look, needs to stretch a bit.
Ivan Paric has imagination. Needs more portfolio and had bad lighting on the fireman.

I finally had a chance to watch all episodes this past month. I kinda wish they didn't edit out all the technical camera talk while they are working like settings and lens choice. It makes it look like all they have to do is point the camera and shoot. There definitely was some lighting setup and dialing in.
Although the primary purpose of the show is pure entertainment, you do learn a bit about this aspect of photography.
I hope they make another.
