View Full Version : Eight Weeks Until Christmas 2007- What Are You Getting?

Let's keep this clean, please.
What equipment are you planning on getting yourself or is someone buying for you? (Photography related, of course.):p
I will start. I really want the 40D and new MacBook Pro, as all my friends here know. I'm hoping to order one or the other or both before the end of November and keeping the box under the tree. I try doing this every year with the gift I get myself. Sometimes it works, sometimes, I just go nuts and open the box anyway.

Suzie the 40D would be the perfect Christmas gift (especially as you already have the 5D :))
I'm going to ask Santa for 500 f/4 IS and see what happens :)
SuzyView
7th of November 2007 (Wed), 16:01
Scott, that hasn't even come out yet! :)
And Mark showed me the 300 IS and I just about died trying to carry it. I can't even imagine how heavy the 500 IS would be, but that's why we have wheely bags and tripods, right?

I get to have Christmas early since I will be with my family a bit early for the "real" day - this means I get to open pressies early and I've gone to town:
70-200L 2.8 IS
17-55 2.8 IS
580 speedlite
Elichrom triggers
some lighting stuff
...and there's rumors Santa's adding the 100-400L :D
It's a WHITE Xmas for me :D

My birthday is on the 1st of December, for which I'm getting a 24-70 2.8L. Then for Christmas, hopefully I'll get a decent bag (Computrekker, maybe...) and some more memory... Or some lighting stands/umbrellas... Decisions decisions...
SuzyView
8th of November 2007 (Thu), 07:05
Andrew, I think the 24-70 is about the best lens I own and use it the most. If that lens is not long enough I grab the 70-200 2.8 IS, which is the natural extension IMO. Congrats. I have 8 or so bags. If you need some advice, just ask. :)

Kja, WOW. That's some list for Santa. White Christmas, it is! Congrats and have fun with all of it.
ooo- that's like everything. You'll have to get a lot of accessories, too. Can't seem to do much without software, bags, gadgets, too.
Jeff, that 1D3 sounds exactly what I want, but can't really justify. I haven't been doing many weddings lately, just having fun. But hope you get full use of it and enjoy the it all the way. I'm surprised how light it is compared to the older version.
Maureen, I am so jealous you are going with 3 of your sisters. I keep telling my 6 older sisters we should do something like that. Maybe go to Hong Kong for real, but they are nervous always to travel together. :( And Italy has plenty of shopping besides the sightseeing, so my hubby would rather have a root canal.;) Have fun and buy me something, while you're at it. :)

Yep, right now I'm taking a course on b/w photography in Italy so I'm learning the basics of slr. So when I get back to the states I plan on getting myself a dslr so I can continue taking pictures. I have everything that I want picked out but its expensive. I think the bag, tripod, filter, etc. will have to wait. I've been stalking 30ds on ebay and I'm so tempted to buy one right now but too bad I won't return to the states until another month. Can't wait though =)
We're getting about the same thing except yours is more expensive =)

Really? Hmmmm. I was there last year and never encountered any problems.
When I go in March, I am not taking my gear... only my Pro1 P&S. My sisters won't have 2 weeks of patience for me to shoot how I like to shoot and the object of the trip is for the four of us to have fun together. My P&S does such a great job that I am happy to use only it.
SuzyView
8th of November 2007 (Thu), 11:44
When I started the restricted photography thread, there were a lot in Italy that did not allow photography, some no flash. But you are right, a good P&S should do it. Since my son won't part with the one I bought him last Christmas, I may have to decide to get one for me. But that is way after my new laptop, I think. My Dell laptop started doing stupid things last night. I can't get a break.

Pft...nothing as expensive as you, Suzy. A decent MacBook Pro is like $3k. No sir.
I'm asking for (and getting) a 580EX II and a 15 fishy. I'm getting the 500 (maybe I'll switch it to the 800?) for my birthday next year.

Well there are no flashes allowed in the churches and cathedrals and some don't allow cameras either. But that's okay...the places are so huge and have such details that it would be hard for any camera to really capture the full beauty of them.
Sometimes we have to take pictures with our brains and rely on good memories to keep them fresh.

Which is one of the reasons why I think I may just write a book called, "I don't have to shoot every sunset" written for photographers who can't seem to part with their gear. ;) That includes me. ;)

Ronald, I've been debating a new laptop for a very long time. And yes, the Pro is $3K, which is why I'm considering a cheaper HP or Dell, but right now, Dell is not on my list. I'm still ticked.

Probably nothing camera related. I'm still waiting for the 5D M2 but drooling over the Nikon D3 and 14-28... Both are many k well outside my budget for christmas presents to myself. 20D is aging but still serving me well. If I find some cash left over after spoiling my niece and two nephews I _might_ finally bite the bullet and get my first few AB strobes or the Westcott Scott Kelby Continuous light kit, but even that is about a grand more than I'm looking to blow on stuff for me...

Well, I went to buy a 22" screen for my desktop the other day and my wife got very agitated - it seems that she had been saving to buy me one for Christmas.
I thought about it a bit and suggested that I had already had a pretty good year for purchases and the 22" screen really wasn't a biggie - I can wait for that - so I asked her to buy buy me the Jason Cole DvD and we can put the money into something lovely for her.
I don't often say it - but she never complains about what I spend on my 'hobby' and, although we have purchased everything she needs for her sewing room, she rarely gets money to just spend on herself - so I think MY present would be to watch the joy in her eyes as she has a big spendup. And, truthfully, I am actually looking forward to the DvD - I reckon there is a lot that Jason can teach me.

Suzie, it's not just the Dell's. My Niece has an HP that is locking up on her. I get to spend today by creating the thirteen restore discs from the backup partition, and reformatiing her computer. I started last night, but it was just taking too long.
Unfortunately, she needs it for school, and they threatened to cut off her wireless access if she didn't fix it.
Can you do a recovery on your Dell? Back up all your data and reformat? It should be just as good as the day you bought it.

BUT I am trying to get myself the 70-200 2.8IS except that B&H for some reason had it sent back to them...if I can't get it then i will just need to find something to help me with my photo capstone project for next semester. either strobes or the nonIS 70-200 2.8. That's basically my wish list :-P

But I'll happily give MYSELF some nice presents!

Jim, I'm meeting up with you this week and then when you get your camera, I'm going to get together with you again. Your lenses will all be better on the 5D. I may spring for the 40D this Christmas and bypass the computer, but my laptop did some weird things yesterday while I was PP and I know, that's out of here soon as well.
Maureen's trip is something I wanted for my 6 older sister and me, but not happening as my mom is still not well yet. But in the future, that's going to happen and BIG!

It's funny you should ask. I do a little photography, but every year relatives and my GF say they couldn't think of a thing to get me. I never really expect anything since it's a time for family and friends and I'm just happy if they are healthy and doing well. But for those who feel they must get something photo related, a B&H gift card will do the trick no matter what amount.

I think I've already gotten all my Xmas presents, when it comes to camera gear. Just bought over $1600 worth of lighting/strobist gear. I might be able to squeeze a Wacom Intuos 3 6x11 out of my wallet for a "Merry Christmas to Me" present. Other than that, my family barely knows which way to point the camera. If I don't give them a very specific list, I'm ordering it myself and they put their names on it.

You just missed a sale at Henry's where the price on the Wacom was actually worthy to visit the store!!! Does not happen often with Henry's:confused:
Wish list this year:
Either the 5D or 1D MKIII, it is definitly time ot upgrade the D60. I'm not sure which as they both have some great features.
Looking at the 400 L f2.8 IS, will probably sell the 300 L f4 IS (I picked up from PetKal) to help afford it :( I've got 300 f4 covered by the 70-200 L 2.8 IS and the 2.0 MKII extender. Can't go spending too much though, we just paid for our February vacation to Hawaii.

I'm buying a new studio. :)
The building I've been eyeing for quite some time has come up for sale. It's a turn of the century brick building that was used as a custom furniture and pottery shop. There's a showroom in the front with two display windows, exposed brick, and a custom made, inlaid hardwood floor. The center part of the downstairs has a large studio area, and the back part is a large garage and storage area. Upstairs is a loft with exposed brick, the original hardwood floors, and a really cool roof deck. I'm hoping that the negotiations work out and that I can sell my home quickly to help finance the purchase.

That sounds like a great building for a studio Liza. It sounds like what I've been keeping an eye out for, not that I'm in a position to pick up another mortgage but I have a family member & potential investor onboard, I guess they'd become my landlord ;) Are you planning on living in the loft or finding a new home along with the studio property?

I am still debating the laptop or the 40D. I cannot decide. It's driving me nuts!
Haven't you been a good enough girl this year to get BOTH, Suzie;)

Tell your boys you'll get them a new gaming system if they adjust the scale so it reads ten pounds less =). Now everyone will be happy, you'll get two new toys and they'll get one as well =)

I thought about that! :) They are getting the Wii this holiday because they got straight A's on their report cards, dumb kids! :);) Seriously, though. A $250 game system versus a $1300 camera or $2k computer? I think they're cheap. :)

Suzi, get the Wii Fit game for it. Comes with a gizmo that helps you play the game, as well as weighs you and checks stuff about you. It's amazingly fun. Wii Fitness on the included Wii Sports game is a good workout, too. Reaaaaally fun. Super Mario Galaxy is great, too. Just got that a couple days ago.

Suzy, the wii is awesome like Ronald says. I always get a workout when I play the boxing or the tennis with wii sports. But also, just you wait about the price...you need to start purchasing games, games and more games. then the price will get closer to a camera body :-P oh and get them guitar hero 3!

Can I get a Wii if I tempt you into buying a computer and a camera? =) What's another $250 compared to 3k.

My sons are really great students and more fun than they should be. The Wii is something they've wanted since their brother got one for his wedding this summer. They play with their friends other than at home, so it was time. They do DDR on their PS2, so it's not new to be active. I have 2 professional pads for that. My kids also play with my 2 DS's. They were purchased so I could control their play time. They actually are not allowed to play any electronics during the week, only on Friday afternoons and Saturdays. I know, you guys are amazed. But really, they have too much going on to be distracted.

Guitar hero 3 is a workout in itself... when you get to hard and expert songs, strumming as fast as you can gets quite the burn going.

and like any good guitar hero you gotta get some showmanship :-) that's also where you can get/feel the burn.
on another note, don't know if I will get my 70-200 2.8IS now :-( its been 3 weeks and idk what's going on. I might as well just get a refund if they're never going to send it. BUT, I did get a 1D classic. gotta go pick it up at the post office tomorrow! I can't wait to use this thing. it will definitely be different than my 10D.

I just got 2 120gb Passports at Staples on Sat for a ridiculous price. I love them because they are so small.
I am going to order my 40D next week! I can't wait and my laptop is coming this week. I am going to be very spoiled this year. Still can't think of anything to get my husband. He's been so patient with me.

I bought him a digital frame 2 years ago, it wasn't that great, technology wasn't as good then. I think I may have to upgrade it. I bought 4 at Staples, one is a really large one.
And I think I may give him gift certificates. He's awful to buy things for.

Well I just got the 24-70 f/2.8L and 70-200 f/2.8L IS when rebates were announced so I think I have to tread lightly. :)
That said, we are planning a trip into NYC in two weeks. What's a trip to NYC without at least stopping in at B&H? :D I'm hoping to make a decision there between the EF-S 60mm Macro and the EF 100mm Macro. Then I'll go home and order it since shipping is a lot less than tax. (Why do I think instant gratification will win out and I'll say what the heck are a few extra bucks and buy it while I am there.)
So what am I hoping for? A macro lens and Adobe Lightroom.
What do I really, really want? A 500mm f/4. But that ain't gonna happen!

I should be getting a pretty nice bonus at work. My plan is to finally sell my 70-200mm f4L and Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX DG Macro and get a 24-70mm f2.8L. I also plan on getting a 40D. Depending on what is left, maybe of 50mm f1.4 and/or a 85mm f1.8.

Wow, you sound like you need new camera equipment, too. :)
I've got my Dell Inspiron already and it's beautiful. The 1920x1200 screen is insane! Haven't used it much, though. I haven't downloaded enough stuff on it yet. But ordering the 40D sometime. Just can't decide still.
