I am very much new to business of photography. I study in a university and want to do par time work buy selling pictures which I have taken over the years. Is there any one who could suggest me if I should make a website and try to sell my images of Scotland. Will that work?

I made a few searches on google and found few sites which actually has portfolio+shopping cart for online sell. I want to kick start some thing like that.

Also please be kind to suggest me your choice of domain name from the following or if you have some thing else to suggest.

subhodeepghosh.com (full name)
sdghosh.com
sdghoshphotography.com
sdghoshfoto.com
sdghoshphoto.com
sdgphoto.com

There is one more critical thing that I would like to discuss with you. Since I am based in scotland do you think i should go for .CO.UK domain names?

thanks

Those domains are too difficult. You need something catchy. I've sent you a PM on a great available domain name that's a neat derivation of your name. Get the .com and .co.uk just to be safe.

If you're selling images online and NOT doing the fulfillment, there are too many services to list. Though you may also consider joining a microstock agency and focusing on images of Scotland - not many people can offer that specialty.

sdgphoto.com shorter is better, & someone may even remember that?

What image hosting/online sales program do you use? (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=393106)

What are you using to sell prints online? (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=391298)

WHS

If it helps, I use these people for hosting http://www.freevirtualservers.com/ and they offer a free hosting package that will probably be all you will need while starting out. You could then upgrade later if you wish.

You will have to pay for the website name. To have a .com and a .co.uk will cost you £18

would any one recommend a name which is related to Scotland, such as scotphoto or scotishphoto or scotishphotography... some thing like that?

thanks for replying Photosguy and Gary.

Personally no.

Scotphoto makes it sound like the surname Scott and the other two show 240000 and 24400000 results on google. Bear in mind there are two Ts in Scottish and people search for your site probably wont mis-spell the word.

Go with one of your original ideas so as to keep a bit of individuality

do you think it would be wise to omit "photo" ? Omit the one part of that name that someone might have a hope of remembering?

Does my name sounds Greek and Latin to you It's probably common to where you live, but as a 1st time customer, might drive me to SmithPhoto which I could remember? ;)
sdgphoto has only 135 google hits. With good metatags, etc., you could be the top one.

Thanks to all who tried to help me out. Unfortunately, I had to listen to my mothers wish because she is paying for it. I had to settle down with www.sdghosh.co.uk.

sorry to those whose suggestion I could not take,

Ok, people now that I have almost setup my website I need advice on how to make a good caption that I will add to my business card. I am having lots of difficulty with this. When ever I tell others that I am a photographer they tend to understand that I also take pictures in functions or events but I dont do that. I am more like a freelance.

What you think about these?
A online image store
Online image gallery
Photographs for sale.

any kind of help will be much appreciated. I am in total mess...with this.

Well, I meant. Since I am student studying MSc in a university I do not have time to work on any projects. So i decided to sell my pictures through website and make some money

but the situation is when ever i tell people about photography they tends believe that this site contains my portfolio.

So I am looking for a catchy caption that would make people understand that this is not just my portfolio but my portfolio for sale...

I hope you are understanding me.
