If you remember the story about the Green-breasted mango (http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=665321) that got lost and ended up in Wisconsin awhile back, he was saved from a cruel winter death. I love happy endings. :)

Here's the story (http://www.jsonline.com/watch/?watch=1&date=11/7/2007&id=31538). Short version is;

"The misguided hummingbird from Mexico that alighted near Beloit in September has been spared the doom of a Wisconsin winter.

The green breasted mango was captured on Monday and delivered to the Wisconsin Humane Society Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Milwaukee. Its ultimate nesting place will be the perching bird house in the Brookfield Zoo outside of Chicago."

HAHA, poor thing has crossed my mind too. The Wisconsin DNR said there would be no attempt to save it. Looks like they were over ruled. ;)

I'm still wondering how it got there in the first place. :)

Interesting. I've heard several stories about people that kept hummingbird stragglers in their sunrooms for the winter. They're pretty hardy little guys as far as cold goes, but they need their nectar.

Tote, hummers only get energy from nectar. They also eat spiders and other bugs by the bucketfull for protien. You would have to know what they eat and be able to deliver it to them. On the other hand, a captive hummer was recorded as living 13 years in a cage. 9 years more than normal. :)
