E-mailing Companys seeking if they need a photographer

Does anyone do this? Would this be a good idea? I'm really trying to pick up some more work, especially for motocross, its about to start up in a couple months, and I would like to e-mail riders, and magazines and such, I'm sure most of them do have their own but it doesn't hurt to try. I was just wondering if anyone has a sample e-mail they send? advice on what to say? thanks for looking!

I feel it might get swallowed as spam. Far better to make a phonecall, invite the photo editor out for a meal etc.

I did this a couple of times last week...emailed about 12 photographers...and now im working for one this weekend :)
