My extended warranty on a PowerShot S30 won't cover an LCD screen replacement because it failed due to trauma (which I contest because, while it has sustained some dings, the screen seemed to go black all on its own). Anyway, what's a good "authorized repair technician" resource and ballpark price for this repair job?

This link may help you. They are talking about some of the same things you are and you might be able to e-mail some of them to find out anything in more detail. There is a very detaled description on one members experience with changing out a S400 screen. Your camera is not the same model but I believe a lot of the details are valid.

Note that you can order the LCD assembly (includes backlight) or just the LCD screen by itself from CAnon Parts in NJ. This is quite possibly the easiest DIY fix you could do on your camera and shouldn't cost more than $40-$50 for the new parts.
