Discovered this inside an abandoned insane asylum. It was shot as I found it using light from a nearby window.

Hmmm - am I being too cynical... wouldn't the rose have died already... or has someone else been there recently (presumably not the previous 'inhabitants'!). :p
Lovely shot though!! :)

it actually isn't a real rose. if i remember correctly, this was taken in what was once a patient's bedroom. i personally like how it doesn't stick out as being a fake flower.

Exactly what I was thinking, but I really like the shot.

just looks like a shallow DOF to me. exif info would show if it is.

I shot this in very low light. Even at 1600 ISO, I stopped down all the way to f/3.5 and still had a shutter speed of 1/5 second. The wall is a bit farther back than it appears. The DOF is fairly shallow which creates the slight blur you see in the background. The rose is the only piece in focus. A zoomed view of the full-sized photo shows the rose is fairly well focused. I'm typically unable to bring a tripod or a monopod when shooting in abandoned places. This particular building is tough to get into. I had to fit through a small basement window and drop about six feet down into a partially flooded basement and then make my way up to the top floor without a flashlight. My friend used the focus assist beam on his Nikon D50 to help us find our way through the pitch black basement.

Did you sharpen it after you resized it?

No, I shot in RAW and adjusted the sharpness then. I didn't make any adjustments after resizing.

Great capture. I love the lighting and the peeling walls definitely add character to the shot.

Thanks for the help. I always sharpened full-sized RAW files because I was told RAW files need to be sharpened. Is this always a bad idea?

I usually leave the sharpening alone until everything else is done, just to make sure it comes out sharp

I usually leave it at the default 25% sharpening in adobe raw before I convert to tiff, then finish it up with usm in cs3

Is the iPhoto sharpening tool bad? I typically don't alter the sharpness during RAW editing. I do it once I have the JPEG.
