Is there anyone else out there that's convinced that the 20D is an Internet joke? :D

(For anyone who missed it, the rumors started flying as soon as a new "EOS 20D" model mysteriously "appeared and then disappeared" from a Canon website. Right. Now people all over the 'net are having spirited debates about its quality and value. A few have back focusing issues already. Also, I seem to remember some others claiming that their 20Ds' shutters are locking up when using the 70-200/2.8L.)

Oh I am fairly certain that the 20D is going to be a real camera. All the speculation is kinda amusing though. It's not as though we've even seen an official set of specs yet.

The backfocusing thing started as a joke in the FM forums...he even put  next to it.

It's sad how jokes turn into serious rumors

I'm willing to accept that Canon posted, and some lucky snoopers downloaded, pictures of their new equipment a few days before the official announcement, so the info will be there when they do make the announcement. What I haven't seen is any reliable linkage of the features everyone is discussing with an actual source at Canon. So, yes, I do think Canon will release a 20D, 17-85 EF-S IS, and 10-22 EF-S, along with a G6. But I don't have any reason to believe the 20D will be an 8 MP 1.6x. The existence of the EF-S lenses leads me to suspect a 1.6X crop, but 8 MP is theorizing in advance of our data.

Fair enough.

Still, I don't understand all of the people making a big deal of whether it has a 1.3x crop. My camera has that, and I rather prefer the 1.6x. The 1.0x would no doubt be best, but if you look at Canon's lens lineup, the 1.6x factor just seems to fit better (maybe it's my subject matter).

Remember that if they change the crop factor, you may face the expensive proposition of needing to buy new lenses (and yes, I know there are those on this forum that believe that's good news).

No, these pictures are all real...they were pulled from canons site. Just wait until tomorrow though i guess

The 1.3x vs 1.6x, tied with an 8 MP sensor is related to the known relation between smaller sensor elements and sensor noise, the difficulty of getting good wide angle lenses with the 1.6x crop factor, and the considered image degradation due to diffraction effects on small sensor cells. There are longer lenses if you need to get there, and they're not all that hard to design compared to extreme wide-angle lenses. At least you don't need to worry as much about maintaining a flat field of focus or barrel/pincushion distortion with the teles. A large part of the complexity of a telephoto is due to chromatic aberration, since the longer FL aggravates this.

I'd say a lot of it is made up... take the file sizes for RAW and LARGE/FINE JPEG for example... 6MP out of an 8.2MP camera? Why would they do that mmm? Shouldn't they be 8.2MP images?

Genuine picture and a lot of guesswork is what that is.

I might, had I not seen the images on Canon USA's web site yesterday morning.

It's not a hoax, but its full of bad information. They basically copied bad information from another web site. The other web site stuck 20D "knowns" from their Canon literature, along with pictures, onto an old 10D page. Bad job of cut-and-paste because they didn't remove all the remnants of 10D data (like 3072X2048 image size). So you're left with about 7 facts interspersed among 10D data.

. . . and we won't know until tomorrow what those 7 are, or if there are really 6, or 8

I think we can pick out most of them:

8 Mpx
1.6X
5 fps
25 frame buffer
DIGIC II
E-TTL II
9-pt AF
1/8000 second
EF-S

We can also wait until Canon announce the camera with full specs. I can wait, I am in no hurry to upgrade my 300D yet

I'm not upgrading anything until Canon produces the camera I want. The fictitious 10Dn (or 3D) would be that camera, but as of now, it doesn't exist. Even the rumors aren't there.

Some of the leaked/guessed specifications may be slightly off, but the 20D is no hoax.
2 main UK dealers confirmed there's a Canon press release due tomorrow (20th).
