I had a Powershot S20 with the horrible E28 error.
I read about the E18 error in some forums.
Do these errors affect the whole range of Canon cameras?
I'm looking at the Ixus 430 or the S60: the respond perfectly to what I want.
But what good is this, when after a while they show up with one of these errors?

I'm not sure what question exactly you are asking.

All digital camera's will get errors at some time. It is just the time from new that is not known.

It is a 100% certantity that any camera you get will eventually break/wear out, we just don't know when whether it be two days after we buy it or twenty years.

I cannot tell you if the Canon cameras have a better or worse record than any other cameras, you are going to have to go with the reputation and research to see if the reliability can meet your needs.

Personally my S45 has functioned no problem for the last two years.

As far as I know the E18 error is a generic lens extension fault. It does not necessarily mean the camera is broken, but that the lens did not extend when powered on. I get this error sometimes whent the lens jams on my lens adapters. If I move the lens adapter then the lens comes out properly and no E18 error.
