Photoshop CS RAW question

:?: When developing RAW files in PSCS, can one save directly to .psd format as well as others (.tiff, .jpg, etc.)?
Currently I'm using PSE2 and C1 Rebel. It seems to me that PSCS with the RAW plugin is a more efficient and faster workflow.
Opinions are welcome and thanks for the help. :D

When you develop RAW in CS you develop to the current workspace. That is, you are left with an image open. You can save it any way you like. However, that does not speak to batch processing, but the answer is the same I believe.


I do not think it's a faster workflow because you can't do anything else in PS while the image gets developed. In Capture One I can be tweaking one image while another is being processed in the background.

Thanks Scottes. You bring up a good point I didn't think of. But with C1 Rebel I can only save to jpg or 8 bit tif. Then I have to exit C1 and load PSE to further tweak photos and re-save again. I thought using one program to do all without the intermediate saving would be faster and less hassle and better quality. The ability to save to psd to finish at a later time is also appealing. I know I can save to tif but the file sizes are BIG and I think psd files are smaller (I will stand corrected if not so). I guess one of the things I need to know is the avg. developing time per photo in PSCS. I will admit I like the way C1 develops in the background.

Well, I must say that PS CS is *much* faster. CS took about 5-6 seconds to develop an image (not counting saving to disk). C1 took more like 22. (Pentium 4 1.8 GHz w/1G RAM).

It really depends on your workflow style. If you do one image, then PS is much faster. If you do 10 images but do nothing to each one, then PS is faster overall. But I like to tweak one, and tweak another while it's developing. With C1 I actually get that done faster than PS CS would let me do it.

I have to agree with Scott. I have become a C1 fan as of late. Before CS came out I did most of my post processing in breezebrowser as I just couldn't get the hang of C1. When I got CS I made the concerted effort to learn both relatively well and C1 wins hands-down in my books.

For what its worth Scott I just upgraded to C1-SE version 3.5.1 and it appears that they have increased the processing speed dramatically.

My dilemma which prompted my question(s) comes down to spending money on upgrading C1 and keeping PSE2 or going for the gold and getting PSCS while it is $299. :? I'm leaning toward PSCS at the moment. Thanks again for the input. :)

Finally nice to see someone else that prefers PSCS over C1. Thought I was the only one. :D

If you are using PSCS to do RAW, your set up is not complete until you add Dr. Brown's Image processor. This allows you to individually set processing parameter for each RAW file, then batch process all at once. Ir will output to TIFF, PS, JPEG (one, two or all) can resize and much more - all unattended. You do NOT have to open the image, it is all handled for you.

Best of all, it is free.

Russel Brown, the author, is a big photoshop guru at Adobe. I have no connection with the product - just a very happy customer.

Anyone using, or thinking about using, PSCS for RAW files should check it out.

I am ging thru the same decision process. I just posted here," Do I need CS"
Jesper posted a link there where you can down load a trial version of PS CS. I did the down load and can use it for 30 days. My first impression is it is just too complicated for me to do what I do now. (I do not shoot raw yet) It is not a complete program so it will not do some functions but it has a ton of features. I think it is powerful but I don't know enough to make a good decision yet, still trying to learn how to do some things I need. So far I have unable to do any action or batch action. It is probably me but may be missing features in the test program. For simple enhance and sharpen E2 seems easier and quicker but again I still do not know CS. So I am trying to get a class locally to move along faster. Try the download and see if you like what you see.
