manual mode refers to the program settings not the focus switch on the lens

You will still have to do the studio flash set-up the old fashioned way, with a flash meter. You could use the review screen and trial and error, but it'd take forever and you'd still have lots of variation in your lighting ratios.

If you do use studio strobes invest in a Wein Safe Synch so you don't burn out the camera's electronics with too much zap through the PC terminal.

As for Manual there are two "Manuals". One is for exposure control and if you are using strobes the camera needs to be on M on the big dial on the top deck on the left (left, if you are looking through the camera). You manuall select the shutterspeed you want (not exceeding 1/200 of a second) and slect, again manually the aperture your flash meter suggests.

But there's also Manual Focusing which is enabled/disabled by toggling the MF/AF switch on your lens. You certainly can have the camera be in a manual exposure state and have AF; or vice versa, or any combination.

Now your next task is to get very very friendly with the 10D's instruction book. A 185 page light read. Have fun.

THE PREVIOUS OWNER OF THE CAMERA HAD DISABLED THE AF MODE WHEN SETTING THE CAMERA IN MANUAL MODE.........YOU CAN DISABLE IT IN THE CUSTOM FUNCTIONS.............

Are you guys talking about Autofocus Mode being turned off, i.e. manual focus, or are you talking about Autofocus Point Selection Mode being turned off and it is into Autofocus Manual Point Selection?

AUTOFOCUS BEING TURNED OFF COMLETELY IN THE MANUAL MODE.

Are you sure that is what the Custom Function is doing for you?

That isn't the way the book reads.

WELL WHATEVER IT WORKED........I DISABLED ALL CUSTOM FUNCTIONS AND THE FOCUS WORKED IN THE MANUAL MODE WHERE AS BEFORE IT WOULD NOT WORK...SO THERE WAS SOMETHING SET IN THE CUSTOM FUNCTIONS THAT KEPT IT FROM FOCUSING................

I just tried C-Fn 17 set to 3 with a 17-40/4L mounted and the camera in M mode and the lens continued to AF. So, I don't think that C-Fn 17 had anything to do with your problems. I think the rest of us are still puzzled. The good news is that you got things working.

Then what could it have been ? It was something in the custom settings because as soon as i set it to the default settings it worked perfectly....prior to that it would not af in the manual mode and i had a heck of a time using it in the manual mode in the studio...had to focus totally in the manual mode on a fast moving glamour shoot.........

There are a number of things that will inhibit Autofocus. Of those, most are covered in one way, shape, or form, by Custom Functions.

When you state "manual mode" you might want to be specific about what you mean, since there are at least two different definitions floating around here. Yours and the book's.

Manual Mode for Exposure has little to do with Manual Focus on the lens.

Custom Function 17 doesn't have anything to do with manual focus, and it doesn't have anything to do with manual exposure mode.

It does have to do with Autofocus operation and point selection and AF focus tracking, as well as AE lock.

Yes, this is not an AOL chat room. You are the one who needs to calm down. Bob did not insult you in any way. He and I have plainly explained what C-Fn 17 does, and that it could not be cause of your problem. You stated that you had to reset all Custom Functions to restore AF, and yet you asserted that C-Fn 17 was the cause of your problem. It was not.

There is, I am quite certain now, no Custom Function on the 10D that directly disables AF when the camera is set to M mode. What probably happened was that C-Fn 4 was set to 1 or 3. This remaps AF to the * button on the back of the camera. Many Custom Functions are disabled when the mode dial on the camera is set to one of the Basic image modes (e.g. Full Auto, Sports, Portrait, etc.). Thus, switching from a Basic image mode to M can give the appearance of AF being disabled if C-Fn 4 is set.

Hey George, dude, there some really good prescription drugs out there that will help you control your rage. Talk to your doctor about them. Also, The Caps Lock key (to the left of the A), I think you keep hitting it by mistake.

George,

I don't know where you got the idea that you got blasted for what you did or that anyone was talking down to you in a condescending manner. In fact, you were congratulated for solving your own problem. Nobody else could solve it because the problem didn't seem possible. I was curious about a possible new behavior that noone knew about.

You said you came here for help, and yet when questions are asked of you to clarify your problem and to correct some statements, you go ballistic. That's puzzling.

@Pekka/CDS: Is there a way to kick this person out, wich came new to this forum, only to talk in CAPTIAL LETTERS with no casual conversation, and who cant talk in normal ways, with no "hi" no "thanks" nothing? I think we could live with out him if he's not able to calm down and unlock his caps lock key!

@martinez: I really dont think that many persons here are unsociable (maybe except you) So if you asking some questions here in the forum, then I think this should be in a "normal" way! We are all Non-Pro's except of some persons and if you want to hear our opinions then calm down!!!!

best regards
Peter
