New preview of the G6 on DPReview -

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0408/04081908canon_g6.asp

From my initial reading, it seems that the G6 is basically a G3/G5 with a few upgrades, the most notable being that the lens has improved coatings (to cut down CA), and of course the 7mp sensor.

Most other features are exactly the same or very similar (which is to say that this camera should be a winner!).

Hiya, Scott.

So are you going to get one? And dump
your Leica? Probably unrelated, but while
visiting your pbase albums, I noticed you
have fewer favorites out since you got
that Leica. :-)

do you think we might see a price drop on the 300D, or the 10D :? now that they have introduced this and the new 20D http://www.dpreview.com/news/0408/04081909canon_eos20d.asp
and the new A95 http://www.dpreview.com/news/0408/04081905canon_a95.asp
one can only hope I can see the 300D in my future real soon now

Hi Cadenza,

Yeah, I'll probably get a G6 - I just can't resist those G-Series cameras. I think they're the best compromise between portability and quality. If the CA is toned down with the new lens coatings, the G6 should be a fine camera. Dump the Leica? Not for awhile, it will still set the standard for image quality (plus, it's just plain fun to use!). :)

As far as my "Favorites" page, five of the photos there are from the Leica (they're scattered throughout, not just listed in the order taken).

My big dilemma now is to decide which camera to use for my annual New Hampshire autumn gallery.

That's a good question. You might see a price drop on the 10D (assuming you can find one), because I think the 20D is meant to replace it. But I doubt you'll see a drop on the 300D, until the 400D (?) comes out. :?:

One improvement is that you can now adjust the size of the Jpeg embedded in RAW. I always found it crazy that you couldn't check focus by zooming on replay as easily in RAW (because of the low res Jpeg) as in high res Jpeg - it's one reason I've mostly stayed away from RAW.

Thanks for that link! I noticed another new feature: the "super macro" mode, like the Pro-1 has.

Ah yes, it is nice to see that Scott Dommin will be rejoining the G series board once he buys the G6. We can all once again feel the anxiousness of waiting for Scott to post a new gallery, and we can once again all turn green with envy of Scott's abilities to coax wonderful images out of his modest camera. :P

Welcome back Scott. Now that you have roamed with the Leicaphiles, I hope you'll stay committed to the Canonites. 8)

Nice to see you can still use the Wide Converter WC-DC58N Tele-converter TC-DC58N and others.

But will need to buy the Conversion Lens Adapter LA-DC58D for them to fit on the G6.

I'm glad they came out with a new G model. But I wish they would've updated the old body, rather than Nikonizing the new one...I think my G3 looks better.

This new G will surely carry on the G torch, it just won't look as good doing it IMHO.

course! go figure I've got the 420ex flash and what do they come out with for the G6 but this

Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2
Compatible Products
550EX-dedicated, clip-on Speedlite transmitter with direct contacts

you'd think they'd have it for the 420ex also, the flash it self works fine on my G3 as long as everything is set for AUTO :?

then again I'm not to sure what the heck that "Transmitter" actual does   :?

Welcome back Scott.

Thanks, Pradeep. That's nice of you to say, but I never really left! I've been lurking here regularly. 8)

If the G6 really has the same G3/5 lens without any recomputing of resolution/contrast/whatever to optimise with the new chip, why should we believe the G6 is a better camera?

Pixel count doesn't sway my purchasing decisions. The quality of the print that comes out of my BJ820 is what counts.

Since we've reached the three megapixel threshhold, surely the deciding factor in image quality has become how well the lens and chip are matched to each other, not the number of pixels? That's why there's always been a strong band of opinion that pictures from the G3 are at least as good (if not better) than from the G5.

Well, they fixed optical viewfinder (but it still probably doesn't work if you use lens adapter for UV and/or polarizer), changed ergonomics (how buttons have been layed out, etc.) and claim that AF has been improved etc. I guess this new G6 might be good choice for newcomers, but I still haven't seen enough reasons to justify upgrade from G3 to G6. 300D (with Russian firmware) or 20D would seem more viable alternatives for upgrade (and G3 would nicely fit in as backup camera), but then again those are DSLRs and as such, they will take all your cash and you still with that you would have little bit more for one more lens.

I accept it may well be a good buy in isolation. But no way should any G3/5 owner be thinking seriously of upgrading.
Whatever hits the chip is coming through the same glass as the G3/5. That's the limiting factor in performance, not what's crammed onto the chip.

The G6 is in stock in the UK with £470 being the cheapest price i have found so far. Surprisingly DABS of all places.

:?: :? I didn't see a rating. It's only a preview so far. Or am I missing something?

edit:
 Ah, I see what you saw. But don't worry, that's just "owner's opinions". There's only one entry, and it's text has been changed to "Ignore above as its for the wrong camera." No indication what camera it was really intended for...

I wonder why the retail price of G6 ($700) is much lesser than the G5 ($899). This dosn't make any sense.

According to the review, the lens has a new coating, specially designed to reduce CA. Even if the lens elements themselves are the same as in the G3/G5 (and that's saying a lot - the lens is excellent!), the coating will make a big difference, and it will be like a totally new lens.

Super macro built in...but what about the G3/G5 MANUAL MACRO trick
using the manual focus and turning the zoom barrel manually to focus
right up to the end of the lens.

Like NOMEL describes here: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=15228

I guess we'll have to wait until the camera actually comes out to see. It appears that the lens elements & design are the same, so I would say that it will probably work.

Now, who will be the first to turn the lens on their brand new G6 to find out? Volunteers?

Note that the G6's supermacro mode is
like the supermacro in the Pro1; i.e., it
reduces to M2 size. You can't do a large,
full 7.1 megapixel image in supermacro,
in the way of nomel's manual hack.

That's right. And the G3 was also $799 when it was first announced.
